Single Ethnic Schooling.

So Toronto school board voted in favour of a Afro-centric school to be opened in 2009.

What are your views on this? Doesn't have to be Afro-centric- could be of any ethnicity. Would you send your kids to a school segregated only for your ethnic group (Or yourself attend one?)?

Personally, I thought we were passed that era when we believed in segregation.

Well if the majority of the strudents are going to be black, it makes sense to have a Afrocentric curriculum. This isn't really segregation. Its no different than any other private institution.

I don't really have a major problem with it as long as it's not the only choice available. We have Jewish and Catholic schools around here and they don't do any harm.

I don't know the full story of this but is it a bit like our Catholic schools? The're catering to Catholics but anyone is free to go there. I had a Muslim friend who went there and got by without any problems.

You better ban the standard history curriculum that is usually taught then, since it is mostly eurocentric.

Yeah, its totally optional and it snot just blacks that can attend, thus making the segregation comments pointless.

If it is a private school then so what? I went to private schools that catered to deaf and hard of hearing which included deaf history and discrimination.

they have them everywhere in America.. I personally think its stupid! I say get with the times. Intermingle... The only reason for schools like this are so they can focus on the studies of an ethnic group or religion more so than if you were in a public school.

We are in the beginning a nation of Europeans after all yes? No?

I don't know if you have been to an American public school, but my youngest son is 8.....And he can tell you more about the civil rights movement than I can....

He knows who Rosa PArks is, MLK, JFK, the NAACP and knows the definition of segregation.

That's good but there is a lot more to any other cultures history than what happened in the USA. I don't see it as the governments job to fund these schools but if people want their kids growing up with a good knowledge of their personal history, I don't see the problem either if it isn't to the neglect of other sorts of education. Funny enough, over here, pupils at Catholic schools generally get better exam results than those at comprehensives which is why non Catholics often want their kids to go to these schools.

Why would you need a European history month when most of the history taught is about European history including the legacy of their colonies?
Now I cannot speak for public school but if your son knows so much about the civil rights movement then isn't he getting a proper education in American history?
Does he also have an equal idea of who George Washington and Lincoln are?

Well then you adjust the curriculum, you don't polarize it.

That is the issue I have with the leftist attitude sometimes, and Ron I mean no disrespect at all, you know I respect you, but you fix the system, to don't always have to add or subtract, you fix.

And here is why, let us say, my childrens school, heck it's 99.995% caucasian, it is, I do not control it, it just is the fact, should we cater all the education towards caucasian issues? Talk only about caucasian leaders and landmarks in American history?

Really, so if I (or any other white person) wanted to start an all white school .. what exactly do you think would happen? Or how about a white person suggests that their be an all black school?
