The Republicans deserve to be shot. They're essentially holding the country's poor to ransom over the tax cuts for the super rich. They are sick and twisted individuals, almost as bad as the spineless democrats.

Here is a point that is missed over and over in this debate...

If the tax cuts for the middle class were extended, it wouldn't be just for the middle class. It would be a tax break for every single American, even the ones making millions a year.

We have a progressive tax system here. So the tax cut will apply to everyone.

These are the rates today
10% $0 – $17,050
15% $17,050 – $70,040
25% $70,040 – $141,419
28% $141,419 – $215,528
33% $215,528 – $384,860
35% Over $384,860

This is where they will go if nothing is done
15% $0 – $70,040
28% $70,040 – $141,419
31% $141,419 – $215,528
36% $215,528 – $384,860
39.6% Over $384,860

Let's use the example of a couple making $350,000/yr
at today's rate they will pay 10% on there first $17,050 ($1,705), 15% on their next $52,990 ($7,949), 25% on their next $71,379 ($17,845), 28% on their next $74,109 ($20,750), and 33% on the remaining $134,472 ($44,376)
For a total tax liability of $92,625, which is an effective tax rate of 26.5%. It's not 33% of the entire $350,000 like most people think.

If congress does nothing and the tax rates expire, this same couple will pay $101,876, which is an effective tax rate of 29.1%

If the Democrats get their way and don't extend the tax cuts for those making over $250,000, this same couple will pay $96,902, which is an effective tax rate of 27.6%

So if the democrats get their way and do not extend the tax cuts for those making over $250k, even those making over $250k like the couple above will get an overall tax reduction.

why on Earth don't republican supporters see this? I will never understand why a working man would ever vote republican, clearly its not in their best interest to do so.

They claim that it's the people making over $250k that create jobs, and if we increase their taxes they won't create as many jobs.
There claim is false on many fronts. First the vast majority of jobs are created because of demand, not because some rich guy has so extra cash laying around.
A good example is my company. It employs 20 people and does about $5 million a year in sales. The owner/president doesn't draw more than $150k year salary... so this tax increase will not hit us at all. Even if it did and he had a bigger chunk taken out of his pay, so what. Our ability to employ more people is directly dependent on how much work we bring in, not how much cash he has in his pockets.
This is the same story all over the US. People don't start a business and hire people because they have money, they do it because there is a demand for their product or service. And it's the middle class guy that usually sees a demand and starts a business.

Demand creates jobs, rich people don't

what's funny is that anyone would complain about those levels of taxation at all. My last job I paid 35% tax on 41k.

At $70k my effective federal tax rate was just under 6% with all of my deductions last year

I think both of you guys are missing the key piece to the puzzle. The tax cuts expire if nothing gets done. Both parties benefit if that happens. Repubs get to act like martyrs for going down fighting for all Americans equally, and Dems get to blame Repubs for obstruction. Meanwhile, everybody sends more money to the federal coffers. All this will be forgotten by the next election ... unless both parties use it as a weapon, making a big show of trying to get taxes cut & blaming the other side for failing.

the argument is turned on its side which the democrats and republicans both do. this time it is the democrats that have their game on.

The discussion should not be about extending a tax cut but rather is a tax increase appropriate. Because it has nothing to do with cutting taxes. It is all about a tax increase.

Anybody who thinks a tax increase is positive is ignoring history.

This is all posturing anyway by both sides. They will probably end up agreeing to not raise taxes on everybody with the rich to get soaked in a couple years. This is the problem with govt and investment. This kind of gamesmanship does not create a stable environment to invest. Because the fickle fucks in Washington are liable to change their minds at any moment

I don't think so. I think they'll argue through the expiration and pretend to work on it until the next election. Let's see whose skeptical outlook is more accurate. :D

I hope this does happen

I want to see an up and down vote on taxes and on unemployment seperately

Not where they throw in all the other bull shit like is proposed. I hear that this ends up costing more than the friggin Obama stimulus when all added up.

Just when ya think there might be some fiscal responsibility the morons are at it. Nah, I never bought into the arugument there would be anybody acting like an adult in congress.

Link>> Republicans Love 9-11 First Responders<< link

Who cares that the Pentagon misplaced 15 billion in war funding? We can only justify responsible spending. First Responders, fuck you.

The Republican Party is a threat to this country. I've elevated Jon Stewart to Bill Mayer status.

The Democrats are the bigger threat... if they have their way, they're going to make this country completely economically insolvent.

I don't think the Democrats were alone in causing our current problems......and we are pretty insolvent now. My two cents
