and Dempsey continuing to choke on queue

He *barely* missed that goal off the crossbar... I don't know if you can really call that choking. He only had one other real opportunity, but missed it way high. He also set Donovan's goal up... so I wouldn't call it a complete loss for him. He didn't play to his potential, but I didn't think he played horribly though.

While Bradley scored the goal off the corner, and nearly put another one in... he was absolutely horrendous on defense... he got beaten on at least two of the Mexico goals. Bocanegra seemed way off, he kept getting beaten by Mexico's forwards and seemed to always be at least a step behind. I think the biggest factor in the match though was the injury to Cherundolo... Lichaj seemed lost after he got switched from left to right back, and that just further hurt our already lagging defense. Then they brought Bornstein on and he made the other defenders look like they were playing out of their minds with how horrible he was.

Donovan seemed to be way too timid after picking up the yellow (which was a bullshit call I might add), and that seemed to hurt us a lot.

Honestly, our best player was Adu... who really seems to finally be coming into his own after all of the fanfare when he burst on the scene at 14. He's great with the ball and can make a lot of people miss... he need to learn to pass when he's got two guys on him though, I think we had a better scoring chance when he shot it early midway through the first half if he had passed to I think it was Donovan that seemed to be open.

All in all though, it was just a piss poor effort. We couldn't match Mexico's speed, aggressiveness, and intensity. Dos Santos was spectacular, and there wasn't anything our defenders could do to stop him for whatever reason. Bradley put together an absolutely horrible strategy for the game, and it's way past time that he get fired.

FIFA might change the game to beat the heat in Qatar

surely not?

Can't see it, there was similar situation when the USA got the world cup where they wanted to make it more interesting to Americans who are obsessed with high scoring sports. They were talking about making the goals three times the size, getting rid of goal keepers and offsides ect. It never came to anything.
Maybe in this case they should have thought about this before they decided to base their decision soley on money.

I believe that one of the main advantages of football over many other sports is the open, flowing style it has. Having two halves of long lengths is an important part of this.

US women beat Brazil on PKs to advance to the WWC semis. :D It was a pretty bullshit call that gave Marta a penalty and got Buehler ejected. Hell, Brazil's goal in OT was crap as well, since the Brazilian that made the cross to Marta was offsides when she originally received it.

But hey, we advanced.

The Swedish girls handed us our arses on a plate. (and we let them run rings around us)

Furthest our girls have ever advanced, and as a "young" team...avg age 22....hopefully they can only do better and better.

Final score 3-1

Sweden looks damn good right now, they completely outplayed us in our game against them to end group play.

but was she in an offside position when the ball was played to her?

The Brazilian that crossed to Marta for the goal was offsides when the ball was originally played to her. Offsides by a good yard or so. I found out why Solo was given a yellow and the PK retaken... because she supposedly came off her line too early. No replay showed that to have actually been the case, so Brazil shouldn't have had the equalizing goal there. The red that led to the PK was an equally BS call the more I've looked at it, they were both challenging for the ball, and it should have been a play on.

But again, we won and that's ultimately what matters. Wambach scoring in stoppage time of the overtime to equalize and send it to PKs was pretty freaking insane.

Damn... make it 1-1 now. I think fatigue is starting to be a factor for us. We played over 120 minutes the other day, a significant amount of that with 10 players, and France had an extra day off as well.

We (Man United) kick off pre season tonight against New England Revolution. I can't watch it myself as it kicks off at 1am our time but hopefully we get a good start to pre season but more importantly the players get fitness. De Gea and Jones won't travel to the USA until the final two games of the tour as they played in the U-21's recently but everyone else is accounted for.

Make that 3-1 on a goal from Alex Morgan, the youngest player on the team. Chipped it up over the French goalie... on to the finals.
