I would be open to using the word with them if they wanted to, but your situation was set up for me to say it to them out of the blue. It's not like I'd go up to a group of black dudes and yell "Hey niggers!". I mean shit, do you really think that is what I am talking about here?

It is not okay to use the word in an insulting way. It is okay to use the word in a serious discussion.

The expression is used against the same race, yes but is only used as a derogatory word if the person is acting like someone of another race, thus implying that your race is superior.
