We used to have a test kids took whe they were 11. The ones who paassed got to go to the grammer schools, the ones who didn't went to the comprehensive schools.

used to, huh?....that's interesting....so much of the third world (especially) has some sort of system like that, to separate the university kids from the "trade school" (our equivalent, i quess) kids......

seems something to consider, imo, if we (here in gringoville) are happy with standardized testing and want our kids to live with it, too.....

be a risk for a lot of parents, to put their kids into that situation (pass the test, and you can go to college- you're supposed to go to college-.....fail the test, and you can replace one of our illegal immigrants picking strawberries)

kill two birds with one stone :thumbup

Well of course there should be standards in all schools. Plenty of kids go on to uni from comprehensives, it's still mainly about getting stuck into the work. That system does allow brighter kids to have opportunities available to them without being held back because the teacher needs to devote a lot of their time to helping the not so bright kids in the class.

I guess Carthage is a prime example of something that isn't being taught in schools, morals.

Hate to break this to you dude but if you think holding people to ransom for their life is ok, most people will kind of think you're an arsehole.

I just explained above that I'm not holding people at ransom. How do they have a right to my product? How?
You might be in knowing - my school is an incredibly "moral"ly charged school. They try to teach us all that "sacrifice" bs, but I found Ayn Rand. If you want to know what's moral and immoral, read her.

i hear ya on this part...it's called "incluson" in the states....part of federally mandated policy for use of the "exception processiing money" they give districts that jump through the right hoops.

I wonder if you would feel the same way if you went down with cancer but were given the death sentence when you could be cured because the guy who invented the cure was charging more than you could afford? I seriously doubt it!

I can promise you with 100% certainty that I would. I have a philosophical reason to, I have a principle in relation to this issue - the principle that I don't sacrifice, and never ask others to. I'd accept death by cancer sooner then I would demand the inventor give it up to me. What right do I have? I don't have a right to live at another's expense. So I won't.
PS: He isn't giving me a death sentence. What happens to me has no moral bearing on him.

But please, if we're going to argue over this, please give me a reason why I have a right to his product.

Why would you be proud of that?

The best answer to that is contained in Ayn Rand's novels. But I'll give my best summation here -

Man's nature - all men - is that of a rational being, whose mind works individually, in conjunction with reason and logic. But the key here is that his mind works individually. It is not the property of others, nor can others force him to think like them. He must come to his conclusions individually. The creations of this mind are also individually owned - they are the property of his individual mind, which created them. They belong to no other, and no other's need is a right to them.
But in order for this all to happen - for a man to use his individual mind to see and understand the world around him, to create, to build, to prosper - he must be concerned with his own self interest. The mind is a part of the self, and in order to use your individual mind, you must have an individual self. Being primarily concerned with others is to place their minds above yours - and to sacrifice that individual thought process that makes you human.
So, to be selfish is to be concerned with your own self interest. This puts your self and thus, your mind, as the most important things in your life. When they are the most important things in your life, you will be able to succeed and prosper and create and be happy, and no one can take that away from you - because it belongs to your self.
As a secondary consequence, you will also be the prime mover of humanity when you are selfish person. It is the selfish person who creates the bold, brilliant things that mark each new epoch in human history. You must be selfish to create a brand new work of art or design a great new building. You can't be concerned with what others think - because then humanity never moves forward. The progress of civilization depends on the man who creates - and to create, you must use your individual mind - and to use your individual mind, you must be proud of your self. You must be selfish.

Seriously, though, if you want a better explanation, read Ayn Rand's books.

First of all, I don't follow.
Second of all, it's not her.

I came to agree with the conclusions of the philosophy she developed (not her, her philosophy) by my self. I didn't follow her - she just opened a door. I went through by myself.
Second, (to speak in your terms, for lack of better ones) it's not her that I follow - it's the philosophy. I didn't go along with it because I because the ideas make sense.
Read her- you'll be surprised.

There has to be a limit to selfishness and you probably should learn to think for yourself instead of having Ayn Rand do it for you.

i liked her books, particularly the fountainhead.....strenght of conviction and being true to yourself are both essentail qualities

and the word selfish is much maligned, imo.....

but where does the courage to risk your self interest (survival) to save another fit into your particular scheme-o-things......?

when is it "worth the investment"?

First of all - selfishness is "limited" by reason and logic.
Second - Rand does not think for me. I read her ideas and I liked most of them. I think they're true. Not because I like her, and I don't blindly follow every word she says, I just accepted her philosophy. To quote myself above, she opened a door and I stepped through it by my own conscious and individual decision.
Did you read the post, by any chance?

When that person is of more importance to you then the thing you are going to risk. For example, my out of circulation paper money is INCREDIBLY important to me. But my mom is more important. I'd give up my money collection because my mom is more important - to me. That's the key - her welfare is in my self interest more then a collection of paper money.
