I think Sam's a perfectly fine boss for a club like Blackburn (not much expectation, chairman let's him get on with it) plus he can attract players like Salgado etc who are seasoned pro's who can still do a job, much like his time at Bolton. As I said, Blackburn just lacked quality in the second half yesterday (honestly I don't remember Almunia having to make a save in the second half)

I don't believe you will go down, mid table would be my prediction.

Hodgson is being hypocritical, he signed a deal with Fulham then goes and complains that Benitez was trying to raid Liverpool players off him, yet he does exactly the same:thumbdown

Chelsea were in huge financial debt before Roman took over, and had they not qualified for the Champions League in 2003 they may very well had gone out of business. Things were that close. As for signing players, Ranieri went mad at the start of thta season, spening millions on players like Juan Veron, Neil Sullivan, Alexei Smertin, Adrian Mutu, Hernan Crespo, Robert Huth and many more and they never really had a settled side because players were in and out. One week it was Crespo and Hasslebaink up top, week after Gudjohnsen and Mutu, and they never got settled. It was only when Jose came in and made the side more settled (as well as getting rid of a few players such as Crespo and Veron, and later Mutu - although that was of Mutu's own volition -) and bringing in players he knew like Carvalho and Ferreria. Plus he signed Robben and Drogba and slowly but surely it became a team with Drogba leading the attack, Lampard bossing the midfield, Carvalho and Terry at the back and Cech in net. And they won the Premier League twice and the League Cup in 2005.

So in short I think that's what Man City need to aim for, that settled side. It's fine having that little bit of squad rotation but you need a strong spine to your team, and they don't have that yet. It could come, with time. It won't be this season because the new players need to settle in and everything.

Except the difference is, Chelsea were already a champions league side when Abromovich took over.

And to be fair, it was Ranieri who got them there.

Only for that season when they qualified. 2003/03 (the season before they had all the money) they were in the UEFA Cup, got knocked out by Viking from Norway. 2001/02 they were in the UEFA Cup, knocked out by Hapoel Tel Aviv. So they were hardly in the Champions League consistently (of course back then there were only three spaces to go around but still)

If Liverpool had won that game on the last day of the season instead of Chelsea, maybe Abromovich would have invested in them... Who knows. He knows what he's doing does Mr Abromovich. Something you can't say about Mr Man City.

Well apparently he was at the Man United vs Real Madrid Champions League game in April 2003 at Old Trafford and fell in love with football then. And yes Liverpool were also close the qualifying for the CL in 2003, and who knows.

As for Roman, yes seems to know what he's doing. The problem for Man City is with the new UEFA guidelines on financial rules they are actually operating at a huge loss because with signing all the new players and the huge wage bill but then not qualifying for the Champions league would mean they make a loss, which has huge implications in that they wouldn't be allowed into the Champions League or indeed any European competitions, which would have other knock on effects. Whereas for all our debts, we still operate at a profit which means the rules don't affect us, plus we'll always finish high up in the Premier league and reach the latter stages of the Champions League so the money is made from that. I am of the belief that at the start of every year the financial guys at Man United get together with the Glazers and work out what the team needs to be doing on the pitch in terms of success to thrive financially. Heck every club does this. Plus, and not to sound accusatory, but I'm not sure that City's owners, if they pulled out, would leave City a lifeboat so to speak in terms of money left behind, whereas Roman would with Chelsea, he's admitted so in the past. So while Chelsea would still be ok financially should Roman leave, I don't think City would.
