Awww, Freddy--she's adorable!!

She'll warm up to you, just keep trying--but don't push it. Once she realizes that you are there to love her and not hurt her, she'll come around.

Hehe, thanks Mindy. Yeah, I'm trying to take it really slow with her and just letting her know I'm not going to hurt her. I keep talking softly and nicely to her while feeding her her food from my hand.

..... on a side note ....

Trying to keep the kids calm around her has proven to be pretty difficult! I'm amazed at how "okay" she seems with them running around near her, screaming and stuff. Yet if I walk near her, she moves away while watching me carefully. I'm thinking she definitely has not had the best experiences around grown males. :(

I was just thinking if her uncertainty was more based on her sensing you did not trust her. As this goes away on you, so it will on her as well.. Trust is earned and with animals they can feel it right away and if you earn it as soon as you meant them it is much easier then earning it again after..

Like Mindy said, she will warm up to you but first warm to her.. ;)

Yeah ... that crossed my mind as well. She probably sensed that uneasy feeling I had when she first came in and it probably made her uncertain about me as well.

...... actually ... just a few moments ago, I was on the floor and she ended up laying her head on my lap while I petted her so .... yay!

Cool.. Glad Mindy was so forthcoming..

Oh you mean the dog... Bwahahahaha

Yah it was the first thing that crossed my mind from your opening post.. Animals have a keen sense when it comes to peoples trust.. That's usually why a good dog will have no issues with kids while an abused one will be leary..

In any case I am glad she is coming around as she sounds like a very nice addition to the family..

She looks like a nice dog and I hope it all works out for you.

I know that I could never adopt a rescue dog again, at least while my kids are little. I had an experience once with a rescue German Sheppard that has changed my views. He was the absolute sweetest dog and well behaved, but one day something scared him and he turned around and came right after my face... a very scary thing. I didn't have kids at the time so it was just me. I was quite taken aback since we got along so well for over 6 months with zero signs of aggression. I still don't know what set him off but I'm glad it was with me and not a child, I would have never forgiven myself if he hurt anyone.

Just be very careful with the dog around your children, you never know what happened in his past or if there is anything that might set him off. And if anything does set him off, it will be over in seconds...

Most definitely! Those thoughts continue to cross my mind. Her paperwork shows that she had to have quite a bit of medical attention when she came in. So this makes me very nervous about what might "set her off."

As much as we love dogs ... they are still animals with a whole different thought process then us so that does have to be remembered.

Update: So, last night my wife and I had her follow us into our room and made a bed for her on the floor at the foot of the bed. Guess where she decided to lay? MY spot on the bed! >:c So, we both cuddled up with her and saying, "this is a bad idea" and "this is setting up for bad habits" but we couldn't help it. She was so tired from the nervous day of playing and she was so cute up there with us. Only problem is that she is a BED HOG! I couldn't get her to move over so I had just a little sliver of bed space to sleep on. I woke up with my lower half hanging off the bed while she was pressing against my body. She is MUCH more comfortable acting this morning. She isn't shying away from me this morning and is actually coming up to me now. :)

i'd love to see exactly how big she is because she looks like a staffy to me

Yeah, I'm curious as well ... her paperwork says, "American Pit Bull (full breed)" ... yet on the second page it says, "Pit Bull Mix" ... so I'm not really sure.

Awwww she's beautiful! The pit bulls I have known have been wonderfully loving and happy dogs; they're just so intense. I'm the same as you- just can't help feeling a bit leery even though I know better. All dogs have the potential to be dangerous.

I really do admire the demeanor of this breed, hope she works out well in the family!

You're dog may have a high prey instinct (which is normal and isn't always considered aggression), but you need to ensure you can control her if that prey drive kicks in around a smaller animal if she's off lead.

Haha no kidding! My ex's pit seriously would morph into a hunting machine when she'd see a squirrel...it was like a switch flipped and help you if she was off the leash, you'd have a panting dog staring up a tree 3 miles down :24:

awesome looking dog

you have more trust than I do. There are certain breeds I never would get from a rescue org.

When I was young a neighbor of my sisters had one of the nicest and best behaved german shepards I have ever seen. It was a pussy cat. But if it saw the post man it would turn into a monster and would easily tear thru a screen door to attack the post man if given the chance.

My cousin had a rottweiler that was fine with you if you were inside the house. If it saw you in the yard it would do the same as the shepard and go no nuts.

If I wanted certain breeds I would only get them from trusted breeders.

I wish you much luck, she looks like a very cute dog. I have two papillions and boy are they hyper. They charge after a lot of bigger dogs, who usually laugh at them. They also are very protective of one of our cats who act like a dog, himself. Pets, gotta love them.

I know what you mean! It is definitely going to take some serious vigilance in ensuring that she doesn't suddenly turn aggressive from something ... ESPECIALLY around the kids. Like Tim said earlier, "It would be over in seconds ..." that concept scares the BEEJEEZUS out of me! That documentary I mentioned earlier talked about the breeding of the Pit. Apparently, there was and is a HUGE population of them and the shelters just get filled with them! My wife was saying it seemed like the shelter she went to was mainly full of Pits. Truly sad. I would have preferred a professional breeder when it comes to this breed ... but my wife has a heart that melts easily ................ so do I after a bit lol!

LOL! Thank you! I remember having a Pom that pictured himself as a Mastiff and would stand on the property line and bark at anything that had the audacity of being near HIS property. He was going to be sure that everything KNEW that he was a killer and not to come near LOL!

I can see how she would fall for the dog though

The party store down the street had a baby pit bull and it was a great pup.

If you already are getting it to trust you I would think that is a good sign. Some dogs never learn to trust.

I have had 3 of that breed over the years. The females are less likely to get nasty around other dogs than the males. Had to shoot the one male at 2 years old after he turned on my old beagle one day for no reason. We had him from a puppy too. The other male was with us for 13 years till he passed.
