For some reason, I don't think this is all about the United States...
That was kind of the point I was getting to. ;) If we care about other countries in the world besides ourselves, we need to do something to take care of this guy. Diplomacy obviously hasn't worked, maybe we can try it a bit longer, but there's a very real danger of this guy going off the deep end and ordering a strike on someone, more that likely SK?
Clean and quick? I have to disagree.

The 'Korean People's Army' is the 4th largest in the world, with over 1.1 million strong standing army, with a reserve force of 7.7 million. Even with antiquated weaponry, the KPA is still a force to be reckoned with. Over 60% of their military is located within 100km of the DMZ, and I would assume any attempts to strike at their nuclear facilities would result in them invading South Korea.

Not saying that North Korea would win or anything, I just think it would be a very bloody and drawn out affair. This is probably something that North Korea has been preparing for, for about the last 50 years of so.
Good points. Looks like a grim outlook regardless of which course we take.

- If we try to just take out him, it could create a war as his followers rally, and possibly launch nukes at us or SK.
- If we try to take out their nuclear facilities, it could create a war as they get upset and lash out at their closest enemies. Less messy than letting them launch a nuke, but still a bloody affair.
- If we continue with diplomacy, it's likely that he will continue to not listen, and we risk him launching a nuke at whomever he deems his worst enemy.
- If we do nothing, we risk him launching a nuke at whomever he deems his worst enemy.

North Korea Threatens Military Strikes on South
SEOUL, South Korea — The South Korean and American militaries on Thursday raised their level of alert on North Korea, a day after the Communist North threatened a military clash.
The militaries, which include 25,000 United States troops based in South Korea, raised the alert from Level 3 to Level 2, the Defense Ministry of South Korea said. The shift involves a significant increase in reconnaissance flights and spy satellite activities, as well as more vigorous gathering and analysis of electronic data from the North for signs of possible provocations, ministry officials said.
Level 2 is the second highest level of vigilance and it is invoked when military officials fear “a grave threat” from the North, the defense officials said.

This was in response to this

North Korea announced yesterday that it was abandoning the armistice that ended the Korean War 56 years ago, and threatened war if there were any attempts to search its ships for weapons of mass destruction.

Obviously diplomacy won't work!

Gates: Nuclear-armed N. Korea not acceptable

CNN) -- The United States will not accept North Korea as a nuclear-armed state, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Saturday at an international conference.
We will not stand idly by as North Korea builds the capability to wreak destruction on any target in the region -- or on us," said Gates, speaking at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Singapore.
"Our goal is complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and we will not accept North Korea as a nuclear weapons state," he said.
His comments came amid growing concern across the globe over North Korea's latest nuclear test and test-firings of short-range missiles.
On Friday, two Defense Department officials said the latest U.S. satellite imagery has spotted "vehicle activity" at a North Korean ballistic missile facility.
"North Korea's nuclear program and actions constitute a threat to regional peace and security. We unequivocally reaffirm our commitment to the defense of our allies in the region," Gates said in Singapore. video.gif Watch what Gates thinks of crisis »
The United States would hold North Korea "fully accountable for the consequences" if the secretive state were to provide nuclear weapons or material to other nations or groups, Gates warned.
North Korea's programs have isolated the country and "quite literally, starved its people," he said.
"Dependent on the charity of the international community to alleviate the hunger and suffering of its people, North Korea's leadership has chosen to focus the North's limited energy and resources on a reckless and ultimately self-destructive quest for nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles," Gates said. interactive.gif Learn more about the situation »
He said the administration of President Obama and its allies "are open to dialogue" but won't bend to pressure or provocation.
And on this count, North Korea's latest reply to our overtures isn't exactly something we would characterize as helpful or constructive," Gates said.
"At the end of the day, the choice to continue as a destitute international pariah or chart a new course is North Korea's alone to make. The world is waiting."

Interesting to see how Korean news reports it. To be fair, they do have a point about the US.

U.S. Termed Chief Culprit of Nuclear Proliferation

Pyongyang, June 11 (KCNA) -- The United States is wholly to blame for sparking a new nuclear arms race and a thermo-nuclear war as it is taking the lead in developing nuclear weapons. No matter how noisily it is trumpeting about nuclear disarmament, nobody will lend an ear to it.
Rodong Sinmun Thursday observes this in a signed article.

It goes on:

The nuclear disarmament touted by the U.S. has nothing to do with the efforts to prevent a nuclear war and defend the peace and security of the world as it is nothing but hypocrisy and deception.

The basic factor of the nuclear proliferation lies in the U.S. quest of hegemony. The U.S. policy based on the double standards is the main source of upsetting the world nuclear non-proliferation regime and disturbing the international stability.

The U.S. is conniving at the development of nuclear weapons and access to them by the pro-U.S. forces and its allies, backing them and even cooperating with them, prompted by its double standards and biased stand. But it is seriously calling into question the "nuclear issue" of those countries which do not curry favor with it and behaving as if it were a "nuclear judge." This is the height of sarcasm.

The U.S. has undisguisedly pursued a policy of nuclear blackmail, ignoring the requirements of the NPT and the obligations under it, while frantically stepping up the preparations for mounting a preemptive nuclear attack on other countries any moment.

The Korean Peninsula is exposed to the biggest danger of a nuclear war in the world.

The U.S. war maniacs are threatening to mount a preemptive nuclear attack on the DPRK without any advance warning after singling it out as one of the targets of their preemptive nuclear strikes.

It is self-evident that the DPRK can never abandon its nuclear deterrent unless the U.S. nuclear threat is removed.

The U.S. contends that it should have a monopoly of nukes while other countries should not be allowed to have access to them and it is free to brandish its nuclear stick and attempt to mount a preemptive nuclear attack while other countries should not be allowed to have any nuclear deterrent to counter it. What brigandish logic it is.

If the U.S. is truly interested in preventing the spread of nukes, it should cease the modernization of nuclear weapons and take the lead in nuclear disarmament.

You may call that interesting but I call it absurd. The US has to my knowledge NEVER threatened to use nuclear weapons after we bombed Japan. This is more rhetoric coming from a mad man. He is the one that is destabilizing but I am sure those who hate the US will no doubt agree with him.

I just said they have a point, most of it is pretty absurd. I was talking more about how the US seems to think they should dictate who and who shouldn't have nuclear weapons when so far they are the only ones who have used them against their enemies.

I agree on that point Peter but this time it is not just the US that is against NK having nukes ;)

And for good reason as the guy is a nut.
