Re: Merrry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

I would like to hear from someone who is offended when they are wished a merry christmas.

Supposedly you are out there. But I've never met anyone. Do you really exist?

:thumbup That was basically my point...i think this angst over it is greatly overblown.

Re: Merrry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

Personally I'm not offended by any of the religious texts in public or the phrase "One nation under God." They're just words, its the person that determines if they are sacred or of importance. For me they are just words, but that doesn't give me the right to harass people who find them sacred. Likewise people who find them sacred, shouldn't give people like me a hard time not seeing eye to eye with their views.

In short, it goes both ways.

Re: Merrry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

Lol, well I'm glad to hear most of you say you don't care, and no one is particularlly offended about it. I agree. I mean, I have no problem with other holidays being celebrated around the same time, and if someone wished me a Happy Hanukkah, I'd have no problem with it. I'd probably wish them the same back, since that was their belief.

I can breath a sigh of relief that the world isn't going crazy, just the politicians. :)

Re: Merrry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

You needed more choices in your poll. None of those answers seem appropriate to how I feel about it. It's not a big deal to me either way, but I do care. :) If I'm addressing a group of people I don't know, I say "Happy Holidays" because not everyone celebrates Christmas and it's presumptuous to act like they do. If I'm dealing with Christians, like at a party of people I know, I say "Merry Christmas". It's simply being considerate.

Kind of related, if Municipalities are going to allow Christmas scenes on public property, it's only fair if they allow other religions to put up displays for specific celebrations.

In my mind though, I don't see the point of making an exception for a few by upsetting many. Just about everyone celebrates Christmas, but hardly anyone celebrates the other holidays during this time. So maybe I'm not being politically correct in saying this, but I don't see a problem with only having Christmas decorations up on public property. If other people want to celebrate other holidays, that is fine, but why would they need to put up decorations on public property when hardly anyone else will enjoy it like they do? It's just more politically-correct nonsense to me... just put up what the majority of people enjoy and would like to see. :)

That brings up another though though - what even defines a "Christmas" decoration? Just about everything (including decorated trees) could be considered a "winter" decoration. About the only thing I could see as being specifically religious is a nativity scene.

Re: Merrry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

I always say "Happy Winter Solstice", which always gets a puzzling look. Since I'm an atheist wishing anyone a Merry Christmas or holiday (also a reference to religious event) is not politically correct for me. Besides its my way of telling the PC crowd "fuck you".:D ;)

Oh and BTW, Happy Winter Solstice!

Don't misunderstand, I want those who so desire be able to say Merry Christmas or whatever blows smoke up their skirt. I'm not offended, I take comfort in your ability to do so. And that is what separates me from the liberal PC crowd, that fact I believe someone has the right to express their beliefs unlike the liberals who would shut you down on the perceived chance you might offend "someone". Screw the "someone", the liberals offend me.

Re: Merrry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

Its always been amazing to me that some folks want to tell others --how to wish them well . :confused
When someone wishes you well , whether a religious holiday or no-- its a good thing.
A happy holiday , merry christmas, or any greeting of this sort is fine with me .
People who demand a greeting according to what they prefer, and whine about it ---suck.. >f

How un-PC of you. Don't you know that there are people who will tell you what is good for you and society. And you better follow their teachings or face their wrath. They shall call upon the mighty god of the ACLU (note the play on words ACLU-god). We call them liberals.

Re: Merrry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

I guess I see your point Heather..I was thinking specifically of the Christmas holiday.

Happy Holidays is a good "general" all encompassing pre-xmas phrase

Christmas is Christmas, and I'm not Christian. To me, the Holiday Season meant Christmas and New Years. If somebody referred to a Holiday party or Happy Holiday I will tell them I am insulted.

And that's the whole point that bothers me. Politically correct emasculated social engineers are going about being insulted and offended for people that don't necessarily feel it! Telling my co-worker he can't mention the stink of other people's food in the lunchroom because somebody might be offended? These pathetic little people imagining every possible way a minority may be offended then telling us we can't do it. Well, I have some news. I counted heads the other day in our lunchroom, with the results below:

Blacks = 7

Indian = 5

Filipino = 7

White = 8

Now, unless my math is faulty, 8 out of 27 makes me a minority so I think it's my fucking turn to feel offended! :mad I will lodge a complaint against the first fucker that makes a comment about my sardines!
