I watched the speech and here is my non-biased impression. :)

1. Lacking big on specifics- :thumbdown
2. Acknowledged government and Republican's and Dems failures. :thumbup
3. Addressed job loss and retraining, but in generalities, vague.
4. Mentioned education and choice, like private, charter, public, which correct me if I'm wrong are choices we all ready have. Improving schools and teachers- :thumbup but very generalized.
5. Go for more home grown energy make lots of new jobs- :thumbup Drill Baby Drill is a sideshow and won't make any difference in our energy security at least not from new off shore sites. :thumbdown
6. Spent way too much of speech talking about his military service to his country- :thumbdown. If I were to vote for him it would not be because he was a pow. Although it is something to be proud of, having endured that, it in itself is not a qualification for President.
7. Vowed for higher transparency and accountability in government, a rebuke of the Bush years and a worthy goal- :thumbup
8. Talked in general terms about security, vague.

I thought Cindy McCain exclaiming to "get government off your back" was not very honest as the Republican's had a clear shot when they were in charge of the Executive and Legislative Branches and what did they do? And then McCain telling the good Republican conventioneers "you'll get to keep your money". All righty then, besides sounding a little selfish. ;)

It was an OK speech for the position the Republican party is in today. McCain is not a very good orator, but that is not as important to me as the details of the speech. I think trying to separate themselves from Bush is the only way they will ever get elected. At least he's not a dummy like Bush...

Anyone notice the protesters? Actually I would prefer it if he could deliver his speech without being heckled but I'm not surprised. With all the pissed off people floating around, a few were bound to dribble in.

I was laughing almost the whole way through it. The part about achieving world peace made me laugh so hard, along with several other ridiculous things he said.

Overall though, I agree with your assessment.

I say wait until the debates start happening. Something tells me John is coming into his own, especially since he has the nomination, I think there were some "old school" conservatives saying "Oh shit.....I'm dead meat".

And as a side note, Palin is going to eat Biden alive. Write that down, you heard it here first.

Totally in agreeance there--Not sure that Palin with eat Biden alive, but he's not going to get the better of her. She's a pit pull disguised as a beauty Queen. What can he attack her on? Iraq? She's got a son in the military. The poor and downtrodden? She's got a Down Syndrome Baby. Hating minorities? She's a woman and her husband is part Eskimo. All the usual Democrat smear tactics are off the table with Palin--the only thing she's vulnerable on is her experience but Biden DOES NOT WANT TO GET THERE because Obama is equally vulnerable--hell, he's never authored a major piece of legislation and all he ever did in Congress was say "Present" the guy couldn't make up his mind on how to vote.

Something tells me she's going to be prepared, and she has been in politics in perhaps one of the most political "good ole boy " systems in the country, I don't see her shying away

No--she won't shy away---I don't see how Biden attacks her--on what? I just don't see what he can use on her. He can't talk about her pregnant daugther like the media--what the hell does he attack her on?

From what I have taken in on the race, first of all I don't trust Obama. I don't know that much about him but I just don't trust him! It's a gut reaction. I don't know if McCain has the stamina at his age to be agressive enough but something hit me about Palin. I'm no conservative but if I was American I would have a very hard time voting Democrat.

That's pretty much a universal observation except from the very partisan Democrats. A lot of people would rather have her as the Presidential Candidate--she's one little spitfire--reminds me of Moonmist!!! :D

Tell me mouldy. What is it about Obama that creeps me out? I don't know his history or background but I feel there is something phoney about him. The closest to it that I can get is that I feel that he has a personal agenda. Shouldn't a president put his country before himself?

For me its the air of a used car salesman--a slick talking person that's going to tell you what you want to hear.

I have to tell you I didn't like McCain much either nor did I like the Palin pick, but after watching her speech the other night, this woman re-energized me. She did not sound at all like a politician. This is a woman that is a real person--she's got a real family, she's got a son she's shipping off to Iraq in a week, she's got a special needs child, she's got a working class blue collar husband, she took on he oil companies in Alaska and she fought the Ole Boy politics to first become Mayor and then Governor and she's got an 80% approval rating.

I don't like everything about her--I think she's too conservative socially but on balance she's the real deal.

I don't think there is such a thing as the real deal anymore.

it would be nice to have a person with her ability and views who was not so stuck on the religious issues too

Fair enough on Obama; that is kind of the sense I get: insincerity. I like Palin's speech at the convention. If she can show enough guts to ward off the Capital Hill vultures she may prove to do the nation some good, but I still doubt McCain. I think they should switch jobs. But is it all a moot point? How weary of the last 8 years of Republican rule are Americans and can they hold onto power? How are the polls reading down there?

The polls are about even statistically with Obama having a few point edge--but we have not see polls since Palin's speech, so I suspect that it might change next week. But honestly polls this early are useless (unless there is a large gap). They could easily swing significantly in the next 60 days. Thing is the Democrats have controlled Congress for two years and this has been the worse two years out of the last 8 easily. They've got an approval rating in the low 20s so they aren't popular either by any means.

I said a week ago that Obama needed to have a larger lead. He did not do it. If the war shows further signs of winding down Obama is toast. People do not typically like change. They like what they are used to. Sure the economy sucks but that will sort itself out if the govt gets out of the way. And that is exactly what Obama will not try to do.

Jon Stewart Comedy Central Summary of the RNC:

John McCain's Acceptance Speech.

Watch the near the end of this video when competing videos are used showing McCain's stated goals in his speech compared with video clips from Bush's acceptance speech many years before. They are an exact parallel. More of the same? Comedy Central nailed it. :D
