Law Enforcement abuse or kids just being dumbasses??

The Taser is definitely over-used in certain situations ... and it has been an AWESOME tool in others. Just depends on the one holding the taser gun. Don't know if better training is needed (since there is those out their who do know when to use it responsibly) or better psych tests?

While it could be said that many of the deaths were on subjects that might have deserved it, the death of any innocent person is far to much..

There is always something else to blame as well.. He was high on Coke and that's what killed him, or he had prior heart condition hence he had a heart attack and it was not the Taser that killed him.. We heard all the excuses here as you can see from this map how many deaths there have been and this stopped count in 2007 ( 5 years ago ) from Taser related uses.. You gotta remember we only have 30+ million people here not 300 Million and not much gets lost in the news..

Taser President came up to BC to fight this new procedure as we were one of their "prospering markets" as he sat in court. They were so pissed they were willing to sue the Province ( State ) for defamation saying they have never lost and claiming their device is 100% safe.. We are still waiting for the lawsuit..

This device in my opinion is as dangerous as a defibrillator and we don't hand those to people to walk with on the street..

Although the Taser is a programmable device, the controlling software does not limit the number of the bursts of pulses and the time between bursts while the trigger is held down continuously, or the number of times the shock cycles can be repeated. Thus the design does not adequately reduce the likelihood that the victim's heart enters into a deadly ventricular fibrillation.

I've been tased a couple of times.

I'd rather be tased than take some lead traveling at a high rate of speed any time of the day.

Two on ONE within 10 feet, if the two know what they are doing, the unarmed ONE doesn't stand much of a chance if the two want to put a beating on him.

Yeah, most people wouldn't know a retention holster if they saw one, but you would be surprised how quick you could disarm a holstered sidearm in a physical confrontation. Then the LEO's own gun can be used on him.

Anyway you cut it, getting paid less than 100k a year isn't worth it putting your life on the line every single day, NEVER knowing what yahoo is nuts enough.

But my question? Why did the cop feel threatened, he saw no weapon? He saw men with a video camera filming? Why did two men video taping a Walmart require him to ask for ID?

I think the guys may have been cocky, may have been even in "altered" states, but the cop was out of line and more afraid of their video taping him than he was of them.

My two cents.

He was a power tripper...Some people are like that

Yes, and those people should not have a gun or taser and REALLY DO need to have their actions documented so they cease power tripping.

I live in a city which has a terrible history of power hungry/corrupt police. In fact there is a big lawsuit currently about them having tasered a man to death who was (not politically correct term) retarded. Many police knew it and tried to blow it off. THANK GOD FOR SUREVEYLANCE (sic) Cameras at the convenience store.

When I was taking some Criminology courses (when I was thinking of becoming a cop) I remember a big topic was psychology and how important that knowledge plays in police work anymore. The ability to determine if a subject is psychologically "challenged" is really important in the role of a Police Officer, in my opinion.

Are criminology courses required for the average cop? Mind you, I think cops are underpaid considering the risks they take, etc., With more attractive pay I think candidates that could/would be more "well-rounded" would be more willing to apply. I think it's a shame what we expect of cops for the money they make. Hence this guy moon-lighting in the first place

Some police departments don't even require a college degree. Most of the major ones do anymore, however. Actually, the department in my local city was pushing for a business degree (:wtf:)

I have a degree in Criminal Justice (completely useless for me now, but whatever, LOL) and more and more Police Departments are requiring a 4-year degree (generally in Criminal Justice) for their officers. While it isn't a baseline all around the board--it's becoming more and more common that you will likely do better, and have a better chance of being hired with a 4-year degree as opposed to nothing, or a 2-year. Like Mercury said, most large/major city PD's require a degree.

Criminology was one of our required courses.

Precisely :)

A business degree? I have no response but HUH to that :willy_nilly:

I know right?

It makes perfect sense. Isn't it all about the money these days? How many tickets you can write in a shift?

LMAO! No kidding

I think every taser should have a little camera with audio...cost would be negligible.
The tased a minor to death here...he radioed in for help so they could tase him some more.
He went through several minutes of being tased...died shortly thereafter.
IMO the laser should not be allowed to repeat after the five second initial taze..5 seconds is actually a long time..plenty of time to gain control of a essentially crippled opponent.
What they do is keep tazing you for failing to comply...you cant comply as you are being tazed..Kind of hard to put your arms behind your back while being tazed...also you may not even be aware of the command due to the drama of the shock.

I agree. The notion that tasers are a nonlethal method of subduing criminals seems to be used as an excuse to abuse them. Police Officers should think hard before using them, just as they would before taking out their weapon.
