Piracy is a social service !!! we can make things more popular because somethings in life are available only through piracy !!!!

It's not stealing; you're not stealing from anyone. It's a form of withholding money. The same thing would be to have someone do a job for you (ie. mow the lawn) and not paying them. The solution for that is to pay in advance, but that can hardly be applied to the entertainment industry. Also, no matter what it is, it's inevitable. It's like trying to cleanse the planet of pot; it just won't work.

Not paying for lawn mowing is called theft of services, your examples don't make your point. And you are right, it is inevitable but so what, so are murder, rape, cheating on taxes and farting in public doesn't mean we shouldn't criminalize the behavior (well maybe not farting in public ;) ).

I'm not saying we shouldn't. And yeah, didn't think of it the "theft of services" way lol :D Sorry for that ;-)

When the record companies start charging a more reasonable amount for a CD then I'll start buying them again.

I buy directly from artists websites (it's getting more common) so at least then the people who have actually put the work in get a greater slice of the money.

Simple question - is piracy stealing? As in, if you download a song from the internet illegally, do you consider it to be the same as stealing something that is non-digital?

I didn't vote because I think it depends on the reasons why people download illegally. Yes, it is stealing, but at the same time, it isn't.

I am always on the lookout for new music, and when someone recommends a band to me, I will download a few songs and give them a listen. If I like them, I will purchase an album by that particular band, and delete all the downloaded songs. Likewise with movies. I will watch a few previews of a film by downloading them, and if I like what I see, I will purchase the film, and delete the clips of the film from my computer. I do not believe it is stealing if you are prepared to purchase the song/movie you are downloading. If you download because you can't be bothered paying for a DVD or a CD, then that is stealing.

I do not feel like I should have to waste money on a CD only to find that I hate the music. I would much prefer to download some songs and then make a decision as to whether I buy that CD or not.

The songs I download and keep, and transfer to disk are those songs that are no longer available in stores - they are old songs, or they are music videos which have not been officially released by the musican or band.

Some people download because the price of CD's and DVD's is too expensive, and I am inclined to agree with them. I do not like to purchase a CD which contains 10 songs, has a playing time of less than an hour and costs me $30. That is waste of money. Same with DVD's. The companies are making a fortune off of the sales of CD's and DVD's. I imagine that if the prices were lowered, even by as little as 10%, there would be a drop in illegal downloading.

I would not say its stealing.

The record companies get paid BIG bucks, and the band gets very little. The band (from memory) gets $1 per album sold, where as the record company gets basically all the rest.

If they were to charge a reasonable amount of money (say $5 per album), with the majority of the money going to the band, then people would not download music what so ever, because the music then becomes very affordable, and the band is getting support too.

So its their own doing. I say when they stop ripping the people off, people will stop ripping them off.

That's where I think a lot of musicians get greedy though. If you spend your whole career bitching that people aren't giving you enough money then you've obviously forgot why you've gotten into music.

agreed with wholeheartedly.

i'll admit, i download music. not as much as i used to, i'll buy it off itunes now. but if i'm looking for new bands to listen to i'll often have a friend send me some songs so i can see if i like them before i go racing out to buy a whole CD blindly.

*shrugs* call me a theif, but like bass_man said, if musicians are only in it for the money, they've obviously forgotten why they got into the biz in the first place.
