Simple question - is piracy stealing? As in, if you download a song from the internet illegally, do you consider it to be the same as stealing something that is non-digital?

Many of you already know my position on this, that I believe it 100% to be stealing, but I noticed several of you do not share the same view. Why do you believe piracy is not a form of stealing?

i do steal music cause usually i just want one song on the disk and i know its not right but i dont care. but i dont use any p2p program anymore.

in firefox i have a plug in where i can download files off of you tube or what ever.

i download the music video of the song i want. then i go to a media convert program and convert that FLV file to a mp3. so it removes the video and i just have the music.

takes more time but im sure not to download any virus' that way. ;)

Haha, well at least you all are honest! :) And I won't say I haven't done it, but I have stopped doing it. I think I downloaded a total of 23 songs back when I was like 14, and I acquired the Macromedia MX suite a while back from a friend, but that's about it that I can remember.

Piracy definition: practice of a pirate; robbery or illegal violence at sea
therefore, yes, piracy is stealing
yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me!

So you consider piracy a "right" now? A personal freedom? :24:

And FYI, I don't download. My wife doesn't download. Neither of my sisters or my parents download. I know a coworker who doesn't download. You're right, a lot of people do download. The vast majority are illegally downloading music and games and movies and whatever else. But there are some who do not, who speak out against it because it is wrong and it is hurting the industries associated with the activities. And just because the masses do it, doesn't make it right.

I wasn't saying I'm better than anyone else.

Like I said in another related thread, I'm not trying to be holier-than-thou or anything, I just am telling you what I believe, why I believe it, and encouraging others to believe the same thing. Hopefully, I can make a small dent in the huge problem of piracy.

ian just reminded me of something. answer me this.

when you download a song/album online, someone had to buy that initially. am i right or wrong??

someone uploaded it and people download it and the record companies lost a sale of someone buying it

ok now say my friend bought a CD. i really like the CD and want to go out an buy it. instead i buy it off of him/her. the record companie just lost a sale cause i bought it off my friend and not new. the record companie wont see a dime of that money. thats what they have a problem with. when someone downloads it. thats less money in their all ready deep as hell pockets

Funny though, Sky. Because that is also Illegal.

If music/videos or ANYTHING is being Given OR SOLD for ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY without permission from the creators or money going TO THE CREATORS, then it is Illegal.

Damn right it is.

I don't download movies...I buy all my DVD's. I don't even rent either. I see the movie in theater then if I liked it I buy it...

as for music, most of my music you can't find in the US so I'm forced to download it.

But non of that should matter, like said by many others. I'm not going to pay $xxx for a cd when I only want one song off it? lol fuck that.

:D
