I think that firstly, do we have many members under the age of, say, 8? That was probably about when I learnt about reproduction. Children are naturally drawn to mystery and intrigue, hiding thing from them just makes it worse.

I like how they handle it in Holland, kids get sex ed from 3 onwards. They have far lower teen pregnancy rates than the UK for example and a healthy attitude towards sex. It seems that most dutch kids are happy to wait.

Ed, I was with my son on a farm trip on Friday and most 5 and 6 year olds ( Kindergarden Class ) knew more about animal parts then I did.. :p

I must say kids are very smart and need to be treated with respect.. Although we did not encounter any "sex" that day I would not have been surprised if most of the kids did not already have an idea about it..

Again, age appropriate discussion is how to deal with this issue..

Yep, could do that too but I find kids like at least some kind of answer to their questions or they keep asking. A simple answer is even easier, I find, than trying to distract them, kids are very good about labouring a point when they sense you are uncomfortable with it.
A few years ago we took my 10 year old cousin to a zoo and a chimp with a stalker came up to the bars and started waving his penis through the bars at her. She asked what it was doing and we said that it was just showing off. She had a limited knowledge about sex but was quite happy with that answer and that was the end of it.:thumbup

If my children saw animals having sex and asked me in a public setting what they were doing I would promise to explain it to them at home and would keep my word. As I said if I recognized it immediately a diversion is an option.:thumbup

Didn't your children get curious though as to why you were uncomfortable answering then? I know most kids I know would be. I find differentiating things that are or arn't generally appropriate to talk about in public are things kids find hard to do and learn with experience and age.

Hmmm... I think the real question here is, is it wrong for animals to watch people having sex?? Really though, I'd like to know, cuz if so, I may have to put down my hamster...

My children were very bright. If they asked me a question and I told them I would explain later. As long as I followed through and explained later they were totally cool about it.

yes it would be embarassing if a kid asked what they were doing
If you look at what MoonOwl posted I think she did a damn fine job handling the situation. She didn't react to her kids questions in a way that would alarm them. It was a fantastic answer given she had microseconds to respond.

Edit: That reminds me I gotta go back and rep her.

I thought this was a very good question but it's been ignored by all the folks that have negative attitudes. Matter of fat it's been ignored by everyone.

Story of my life that. Mr Overlooked...

I feel that it isn't what the children see but HOW we react to it. They are going to end up watching how we react to their reaction. If we make a big deal of it, then I feel THAT is what they are going to focus on, rather than the act.

Now, having said that, I'm NOT a big fan of watching shows where animals hunt and eat. Yet it is the normal order of life and I would need to monitor my "reaction" if I knew Mia had watched it at a friend's house.

And, as was pointed out earlier, it just looks like a fight... :D

(And who, on this forum, hasn't been in a regular "fight." )

That's pretty much spot on. Kids learn from the adults in the world, so our reactions are pretty important.

I remember seeing a dad and his son queuing in a supermarket and the dad, a total pikey reacted in a really overblown manner to the checkout girl questioning one of the notes he handed over. The kid looked on in awe as the dad ranted at the poor checkout girl who was obviously just concerned the note was a forgery. I expect that kid will now be just as big a tosser as his old man.

So yeah, better to embrace the situation in an adult way, and set a good example. Animals doing it are a part of nature, nothing to be ashamed of at all.

No, it's nature. A child can't be coddled and kept in the dark. I learned about sex education very early in school.

I don't think knowing about sex would necessarily solve teen pregnancy but I sure think it's better to have it out in the open and freely discussed rather than have it made into some taboo that kids stumble upon themselves in their teens, with porn and their friends "experiences" to guide them.

As for animals having sex. I went to the zoo when I was about 5 and the lions were getting it on. My mum said the male lion was trying to stand on the female lion's back. It never scarred me.

Animal sex is different from human sex so I think it's fine, It's not like the kids going to get a stiffy from watching a great dane have its way with a chuaua

Liberal states show animal mating habits.

Backwards conservative states still teach creationism in public school.
Farm towns do both.

Not trying to start a row about this, I'm just interested because I was surprised that on Offtopicz you are only allowed to post videos of it in the Underground when people under 18 cant see it. Is it not shown in schools in the USA or do you have to be over the age of 18 to watch the Discovery channel? I've never ever heard of it being an issue where I live! I thought the stereotypes Americans have of Brits is that WE are uptight about sex!:willy_nilly:
I think pictures depicting sex should be banned from OTZ!

Mama Bryant used to always tell me not to do anything that I wouldn't do in front of my mom.
I think that applies here too.
If your kids have sex in front of animals then they have every right to watch animals go at it also.
Call me old fashioned, I don't give a fuck.

No, this isn't a row with the site admin, just I was surprised about this and was wondering if it was just an American cultural thing.

I think it's a cultural thing. Most Americans have sex hangups.

Mama Bryant used to always tell me not to do anything that I wouldn't do in front of my mom.

lol Does your mom watch you have sex? Or is sex something you just don't do?

I can't see what is wrong with animals having sex, this last two months I have seen cats have sex, one of which is now heavily pregnant, the other one will in a short time will follow suit

I have even seen plenty of ladybirds have sex, shame I didn't have my macro with me at the time
