Peter the thread in question is not how babies are made!

The video was filmed at a zoo and was animjal behaviour. I would suggest that anyone who has a problem with that should never take their kids to a zoo and make them wear blindfolds whenever they leave their house and not keep any pets or look out the window. You wouldn't want your kids to see animals doing naughty things, animals need to learn that public sexual behaviour is wrong and they should act like humans.:sarcasm
How come you're always picking on Canada when Canada is loaded with Brits that didn't like Britain?

I'm sorry you have chosen to take me referring to something as maybe being a Canadian thing is me me "always picking on Canada." You really have completely misinterpreted me.

Peter Im about 2 seconds from closing this thread. The reason you made it is because you are not happy with the decision I made regarding a video you posted. Its not going to happen on open forum plain and simple, deal with it. I dont mean to get bitchy here but its really not up for discussion.

Personally I find children are more curious about sex if you try to hide it from them like it's dirty and in some way taboo. C'mon dude, it's just nature! I'm sure if you just told your children that's how they make babies, the'd be satisfied with that answer.

I am more comfortable talking to my children about such things in the privacy of my home instead of a public setting where other eyes & ears are taking in everything.

I'm sorry, I though I made it quite clear at the beginning of this thread that this wasn't me bitching at the mods, it's simply a discussion about whether kids should be allowed to see animals having sex. I really don't know why you and others seem to be getting offended by it. Maybe I should have posted it in the debate section if people on here cant hack having a frank and open discussion about their views?
I really think that that would be wrong of you to close this thread, just because you personally dont like it. Just discuss why you feel the way you do or dont post in it. No need to stop others having a discussion because you dont like it.:)

I'm sure people wouldn't have a problem with you answering a question from your child about animal behaviour. It's hardly like discussing humans having sex.

I feel that it isn't what the children see but HOW we react to it. They are going to end up watching how we react to their reaction. If we make a big deal of it, then I feel THAT is what they are going to focus on, rather than the act.

Now, having said that, I'm NOT a big fan of watching shows where animals hunt and eat. Yet it is the normal order of life and I would need to monitor my "reaction" if I knew Mia had watched it at a friend's house.

And, as was pointed out earlier, it just looks like a fight... :D

(And who, on this forum, hasn't been in a regular "fight." )

I don't think it's a big deal, my gosh it's animals, don't come more natural than that, yes it would be embarassing if a kid asked what they were doing but I'd simply say making baby (whatever animals) and leave it at that. I have found in my limited experience, most kids just want a question answered, they USUALLY don't follow up with questions. Anyway I voted yes and animals giving birth too

I prefer not to risk the opportunity to offend someone by having a frank discussion with my child about sex. When we talked sex with our children we used technical terms for the parts involved and made it clear where we stood morally on the subject. Remember parenting is a trial and error affair, children do not come with owner's manuals.

So what was to stop you just saying "they were making babies" and then have a more detailed conversation if you wanted at home?

I rather be honest with my kid then have them be lied too..

Children are NOT stupid and understand a lot more then we give them credit for.. Explaining things in words they understand and treating them like little people, not sheltered creatures, makes them much better people.

I to believe the more you hide things from kids, the more they will be curious and want to know more.. You need not go into gory details ( hence age approriate ) to explain a basic thing being asked..

If your child asks you a question, answer with honesty.. They deserve that much from you..

Easier to ask them if they wanted ice cream or to go swing. :D

Yep, could do that too but I find kids like at least some kind of answer to their questions or they keep asking. A simple answer is even easier, I find, than trying to distract them, kids are very good about labouring a point when they sense you are uncomfortable with it.
A few years ago we took my 10 year old cousin to a zoo and a chimp with a stalker came up to the bars and started waving his penis through the bars at her. She asked what it was doing and we said that it was just showing off. She had a limited knowledge about sex but was quite happy with that answer and that was the end of it.:thumbup

I think that firstly, do we have many members under the age of, say, 8? That was probably about when I learnt about reproduction. Children are naturally drawn to mystery and intrigue, hiding thing from them just makes it worse.

I like how they handle it in Holland, kids get sex ed from 3 onwards. They have far lower teen pregnancy rates than the UK for example and a healthy attitude towards sex. It seems that most dutch kids are happy to wait.
