Hyphenated America?

The example ist an example of an issue, if people want to make a buisness of making their own diners thats fine. However, (you probably dont have this issue where you live, so you cant relate to it as easily) there are people in our country who just feel like them not speaking english, them not recognizing things about our country since they arent born here, etc. its just disrespectful and it makes people who were born here/raised here lives much harder.

Have you even been to England? If not why do you feel you can make assumptions in this manner? But you are probably kind of right, we dont in general have the same kind of kiss arsey issues about our identity as you do about stupid stuff like a bit of cloth called a flag. I dont like disrespect for my country, I'm a true English patriot but as long as someone isn't a direct threat to that, I have no problem with them being here. I'd like to people to respect us for our tolerance and welcoming attitude at least, even if others of my countrymen and women dont.I think that is one of the things about my country I'm more proud of than anything and it shames me to see people pulling us back to to the slave days when we felt superior to everyone.

I don't ask that any incomers into my country suddenly denounce their own culture or any part of it. I don't even ask they embrace our own culture, as a Briton it's my right to not partake in any of our cultures if I so choose, I think any immigrant should have that right too.

My only concern when it comes to immigrants is segregation, I have no problem with China towns or the such - these ethnic settlements are a very important way for them to both preserve family and social ties as well as their culture. What I do think is that it's of the utmost importance that we can accept any immigrants outside of their 'ethnic settlement areas', because this is their comfort zone. We have to make it as easy and welcoming as possible outside of their comfort zones, and from this we will all benefit as a society.

I agree but I think the point is we have developed our own culture. The melting pot age is over. And some of the immigrants are not trying to assimilate as those in the past did.

To me it seems ludicrous to call somewhere and be given the option to select a language first thing. I wonder how many other countries have adopted this approach. Seems to me that while on the surface it seems to be a good idea yet it contributes to the immigrants not feeling the need to learn ENGLISH.

Kind of getting off kilter but I would like somebody to explain why it could possibly be wrong to have a law mandating English as our official language. again I wonder if any other country has designated their language as the official one.

Erm, you speak American, not English, you spell wrong too. At least have the pride to admit you have a different language to us, most Americans I have spoken to on the phone cant understnd a word I say. That is fine, just stop calling your language English because it really isn't!

As for African-Americans, that is entirly untrue. It applies to ANY immigrant who has arrived here and is not willing to give up traditions, and expects our country to cater to their needs/accept their ideas. Why not start a topic and put some information about the topic in the post? Seems logical to me.

Now as for the hyphenated Americans topic thing here... I'm all for it. It gives someone more meaning, and links them to their ancestry.

um... wait... what? Melting pot does not equal assimilation.

A melting pot is when different cultures mix together, different traditions mix together, and different background mix together. They don't all just assimilate into the same thing. Everything is mixed. Different original traditions and backgrounds mix and continue on through offspring.

We do speak the same language. It came from the same basic principle of sentence and word structure. Spelling some words differently and having a different accent does not mean that England residents and USA residents speak two different languages.

PS; the grammar & structure in your first sentence is absolutely horrible... you claim to speak English?

Seems like a perfectly viable complex declarative sentence to me. I'm amazed actually after all that scrumpy the clauses weren't all just flying anywhere:24:
 
There's no grammatical law that states a sentance must be made of x amount of clauses.

Except in the case of Simple, where it must be 1 clause. Compound sentences with dependent clauses, can have 2 or more, and complex sentences can be infinite in clauses, and totally independent from each other.
