You two are making it really hard to pick a side here, lol. I've been reading the two threads where you're going back and forth. And I don't agree with Hans on Hyphenated America and I think some other issues but this condescending attitude you've got goin' on here Allen should really stop. I mean, debate the guy all you want, that's cool, but there's no reason to pull the age card. It's just insulting to him and there's no need of that, am I right?

Dude I have not been to college since the real protests back in the day. :D

I live life on the street and not in a college atmosphere.

I advise you do the same. You will see what is out there and not what academia shovels to you
Im pretty sure Im using facts that Ive learned in college to educate myself on the situation, past and current. The news and my real life expierinces/thoughts help dictate my judgement, however, Obdurate put it nicely. You arent debating me, youre using petty insults as a defense, which is just silly. If you dont have anything insightful to post, dont post =\ If you have something to say that goes against what I say, do it, but this post isnt about me/my life, its about Hyphenated Americanism vs Pan-Americanism, so leave it on that topic.

Lets face it, the USA was built on immigrants. You have a problems with new ones not adapting to the culture? Then why arn't you all living in tee pees and celebrating native American festivals then? If someone is over in your country and not a threat to it I really dont see the problem. Immigrants add to the culture, not destroy it. If it wasn't for immigrants I wouldn't be able to pop out for a kebab, Chinese or Indian so I'm not complaining.

I don't mind immigrants at all. Like you said the USA was built on immigrants. I don't mind so much if they don't adapt to our culture, but all I ask is that they learn the language. Personally if I was going to move to another country permanently, like say Spain, I'd try to learn Spanish best I could. Also I ask that they be legal immigrants.

It was built on immigrants, and it used to be based on a collective "melting pot" of ideas. However, that was 250 years ago. Now, we have our own identity, and it is American ideas, not a mixed amount of ideas from other cultures.

Youre also missing the point, if you wish for people to maintain their own ideals thats fine, its when it interferes with USA citizens that it bothers me. When I have to pay tax dollars to hire a special teacher for spanish immigrants who refuse to learn english (which is becoming more and more common), the line needs to be drawn.

You just sound hostile to change with no practical reason to me. Society is always naturally evolving and this is just a part of it. Yeah, take steps to get people to speak the language but other stuff? What are you going to do, force people to celebrate Thanksgiving and ban anyone from celebrating any other countries national festivals? As the so called land of freedom, that sounds a very un - American idea to me.

Youre missing the point...people having private/local festivites are fine, but seeing national parades, days, holidays set aside - seeing people pay tax dollars so that WE can adapt to people moving into our country instead of THEM adapting to us is the issue with hypenated America.

The Notting Hill carnival over here is a celebration of W Indian culture. It's brought pride to this country as we host the largest carnival in Europe and one of the biggest in the world. It also educates and gets people interested in other cultures. I see nothing wrong with that whatsoever.

Then thats fine. In America, celebrations and such arent really what bothers me. Its the expectation that sense they are in America, we should adapt OUR lives to make sure that they fit in. We should change how WE live to make it acceptable to them.

Yes you should, it's called being hospitable, make changes for them and you reap the benefits of what they bring to your country. It's called give and take and unselfishness, admirable qualities.

Exactly correct. We have an American culture, we are America. We welcome all if they come legally, but understand that just because we welcome you ... we have a culture of our own just like any other country. If you don't want to be a part of it, then leave.

No we shouldn't. I will totally be hospitable, but I am not going to change my culture and how I live. If I wanted to do that then I would be the one to move to another country.

When someone moves to a new country they are ignorant to not expect a different culture. When in Rome do as the Romans do. If they like our culture, great, assimilate. Feel free to make America your home and and share some of your culture with others. But understand we aren't changing into french culture, mexican culture, chinese culture as a whole nation because you live here now. That equates to going to someone's house for dinner and taking over their home. That's rude and it just don't work that way.

I dont see how what they do is forcing you to change your culture. We have Chinese, Indian restaurants popping up everywhere but it hasn't seen the decline of the very British fish and chippy. Demand dictates how successful they are.

Oh and if someone came and stayed at my house from another country and wanted to cook their own kind of food, I'd embrace trying new things, it wouldn't stop me eating my usual food either though.

Agreed.

I see nothing wrong with foreign people offering us other experiences that we wouldn't otherwise have. They aren't colonizing us. They aren't, as Gracie said, coming into our homes and taking them over. The country doesn't belong to just us, it belongs to anybody who wants to be a part. People should welcome the variety in the country.

Edit: I also agree with what Peter said above. Like, the English language isn't gonna disappear because some Chinese are here.
