For wearing American flag t-shirts

Galli says he and his friends were sitting at a table during brunch break when the vice principal asked two of the boys to remove American flag bandannas that they wearing on their heads and for the others to turn their American flag T-shirts inside out. When they refused, the boys were ordered to go to the principal's office.

"They said we could wear it on any other day," Daniel Galli said, "but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it's supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today."

But to many Mexican-American students at Live Oak, this was a big deal. They say they were offended by the five boys and others for wearing American colors on a Mexican holiday.

"I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."

Have we really gotten this ridiculously PC?

See I have a different take on it.

Yes, one should be able to show your patrotism anytime. But why do you think they decided to do it on 5/5 in a PREDOMINANTLY MEXICAN SCHOOL. If it were my 15 year old son I would tell him don't go looking for trouble.

Should they be suspended....no. Should any school official get in trouble for taking steps to avoid a confrontation in school....NO.

I would not tell my white son to wear a KKK hood to a school in Harlem, either.

I want my kids safe, above all else.

You've got to be fucking kidding me. Don't get your panties all in a bunch just because you live in America and oh my fucking god someone is wearing *gasp* an American flag! Heaven forbid.

Too many people run around getting butt hurt over stupid shit. Don't like it on a Mexican holiday? Then go to Mexico. I hate this bull shit about the majority being oppressed by the minority because something's "offensive". Cry me a fucking river.

The best part is that it isn't even a Mexican holiday

Fuck this dude... Half those mexican students' parents are probably illegal anyway. This is America, we're allowed to wear American flags and anything else symbolizing our patriotism. By rights, the next time some kid their is wearing a shirt with Spanish on it, they should send his ass home.

They have every right to wear what they want to wear. If it would've caused a confrontation, it wouldn't have been their fault. How dare they wear shirts with American flags on them in a taxpayer funded school in America. Oh the horror. On a day that isn't even a Mexican holiday, let alone an American one.

The last time I checked, the American flag wasn't a symbol of hate, especially not in America. The rebel flag perhaps, but not the flag that more than likely was flying at that very school that day. The KKK hood is a symbol of hatred, bigotry, and racism towards everyone but whites. The American flag is a symbol of the country that everyone in that school lives in. There's a massive difference between the two, so large in fact that the comparison is completely invalid.

I didn't mean to equate the American flag with a KKK hood. What my point was is I want my son safe and not borrow trouble.

I fly the flag proudly at my home.

If people want to live in the US they are going to have to accept that this is America where we have our Freedoms which include wearing a flag shirt any day of the year. Albeit that the kids were probably making a statement it still is a Free Country to do as we please as long as it's not illegal.

I don't disagree Angel. I also don't believe in automatically having all textbooks in the schools in multiple languages to accomodate students whose first language isn't English.

But, I stand by not putting my child in a questionable situation and there was a possibility it could have been one. I want him safe foremost.

I like how it goes from a political correctness debate to full blown racism

I was just making a point how ridiculous it sounds. No one should be restricted on their decision to show their love for who they are or where they come from.

I agree. I also believe that the kids did nothing wrong. I think it could be addressed more maturely than
"LOL who cares dey parents are illegals anywayz LOLOLOL"
and
"YEW DUN LIKE IT GO BACK TO MEJIKO"

The only reason I (somewhat) agree with the bolded part is because this country was founded on the principle of freedom. Be it religion, speech, what have you. So when someone comes into this country (or from my understanding in this situation, someone's parents) who are they to come over to MY country that my father and husband both fight for and tell me that I cannot wear, fly, show, whatever, the one symbol that I hold dearest to my heart? For that reason, and that alone, I say if you don't like it, get the fuck out.

Being American born and then being told to "Go back to mexico". Seems kind of ignorant to me

You know we have no evidence ANY kid said ANYTHING to anyone, the kids wearing the American flags or the other students to them.. We only KNOW what the school administrator's actions were. To send the kids home.

How did we get from that to send people back to where they came from!!!
