I like the idea of the gov't not knowing how many guns are out there or who has them. Keeps 'em nervous. It's good that the gov't fear the people rather than the other way around.

Truly?

And yet you let the Bush administration demolish your civil rights with nonsense like the Patriot Act?

So you don't think deaths caused by road accidents would rise if we just said 'fuck it, people are going to die on the roads anyway, why spend all this time and money on making everyone get a license?'

Should we really have the attitude that just because a minority will always ignore the law, we shouldn't bother to even try and have regulations in those areas at all?

The situation is somewhat skewed in the USA. The NRA has a powerful position as a lobby group, and is not about to compromise it by admitting to their members that statistically, the existing gun laws in the USA have resulted in third-world firearms crime figures.

The NRA prefers to hold a gun to the head of whoever is is in government and demand that they look the other way.

oh sort of like how Obama is doing the same thing

Gun crime in the US is such a non-issue that it shouldn't even be considered. For a country with millions and millions of guns in it the accident/death rate isn't even a drop in the bucket. You're exaggerating.

PS: Crime in general in the US is going down steadily. Quit worrying.

I think all Firearm laws should be federal and the same in all states. Register once federally and its good in every state. I think its bullshit having you pay a registration fee to register your weapon in a state you might end up driving through for an hour or two on a roadtrip because if you dont you will get your weapon confiscated and possibly goto jail.

I use to drive through Chicago at 0300 on my way out to Montana more than a couple times with some guns in my truck. Thought I knew most of the firearm laws. What is this registration fee you're talking about.

There is little to no logic to likening auto registration and licensing...... to gun control.
A vehicle can be legally bought and sold with out registration ( a bill of sale is proof enough of legal ownership as property ) and licensing is only an issue of use on government controlled highways.

Using the analogy of registration and licensing of a car would only relate to the ownership/use of firearms on government controlled areas. Such as streets, highways and public buildings.

Gun violence is a social problem.
It's more than addressing the legal ownership of a gun. It's really all about the user/owner.

I suspect addressing drug and alcohol abuse along with instilling a just sense of morality and family values ( a horrid thought to the lefty wingers :D....:p ) would have a much greater impact........( so how many weed abusers are with me on that? :D......:p )

In a practical sense.... in the US.....not much will change till society itself changes......and the one we live in was founded on violence and that violence is still being glorified in much if not most of our government policy towards the rest of the world. The US is adept at making enemies.

We need 'change' :D

Why do you think this is a horrid thought to those on the left?

I can guarantee you that my family values are in the top 1 percentile for the country and my morals are as strong as anyone else's. So why does it matter if you are left or right when it comes to these issues? Unless you think these things can only be achieved through religion and you think the state should promote that... then I would disagree with you as I am an atheist and my family values are even stronger than my christian brothers who are VERY devout...

So what what you change to help the moral fiber of America? Where exactly are we lacking in your view? (honest question)

Shit.......I've given up on our society wanting correction.
Look at the crappy choices we have this fall for the oval office.

In time, hopefully things will improve, but right now corruption is the biggest issue.......from politics to business to economic policy to religion and it's leaders.....I'd mention labor, but it'd only piss off John :D

You really expect acceptance and conformity to gun control in our present society?
I'm highly doubtful when the general public is as suspicious of it's self as it is of the government.

I fully realize your intent is to reduce violence, but, imo, it's more of a social issue than a criminalization issue.

I believe that we should have registered guns
however I also believe that having an unregistered gun keep the current US corrupt Government from taking it rendering the US helpless if we had a war

And please, no more car analogies.

Where do the people who have more than 20 guns, NEVER broke the law and NEVER used or had their firearms used in a crime (let alone murder) fit in to all these gun death "statistics"? (added the fact that on average 50% of those killed with a firearm in the US did so at their own hands?)

People get into an uproar when someone goes on a killing spree with a firearm. Take ALL those news accounts out of the statistics, and how much of an impact do those "national headline" stories make on those statistics (gun related deaths)? I'm guessing very little.

Does the US have too many law abiding idiots that own guns? I'll be the first to say "yes".

To be honest, the idea that I should have to fear the people that I help to elect only surfaces when talking to Libertarians. And even then, only as a 'funny peculiar' sort of a notion. I'd rather be loyal to my country than have my country nervously watching me for signs that I might misuse my house contents.
