Of course they'll never happen. It'd mean Washington giving up power.

eta: To be fair, several of Minor's suggestion have been floated in Congress, such as reinstating slavery, erm, the draft.

I could understand the draft in cases of extreme necessity. If the United States was invaded, for instance.

But if the draft is slavery, than I guess you could also say that taxation is robbery and imprisoning criminals is kidnapping.

I dont understand how drafting is slavery either. If a country is in need of persons to fight for it, and you choose to remain a citizen of said country, you do your duty and fight for it. If you are philisophically or religiously against doing so, that doesnt change the need for troops, or their commitment to fighting for the country, it just presents those people with a moral dilema. Whose problem is it really?

I'll do you the favor of deleting the dumb one.
Taxation hardly reaches the level of requiring someone to risk his life.

If we had not instituted a draft during WW2, do you think we would have had a shortage of volunteers?

BTW, rationalizing (call it justifying if you want) slavery and giving it a more PC name doesn't make it suddenly stop being slavery.

If it's good enough for our elderly it's good enough for our representatives, don't ya think?

No, that'd be like saying if this Dr is good enough for kids, it's good enough for me! The program is made to specially handle things that older need, the number one I can think of being diabetes medicine.

Medicaid is more of an all around program. And in my opinion a great one, if I could I would still be on it. I didn't have to sacrifice care at all, I still use the same Drs now that I used then. I mean I think it's fine for Congressman to be on it... but don't think it's some punishment. They could always just pay of pocket for whatever they wanted, no matter what was on official paper.

Accountable in that same vain is citizenship a choice or a slavery as well? certain duties come along with citizenship, including taxation and following laws. would you determine that you dont need to perform these duties?

Rationalize away, Dawg. Rather than trying to justify it, tell me how sending someone to die, with imprisonment or even execution the punishment for refusal, not slavery.

I don't have a medical background so I can't argue, but I have good instincts and I'm pretty sure senior citizens don't have significantly different anatomies than politicians, most of which are eligible for medicaid anyway.

But still, it's an idea that could happen but never would in a million years.

You call it rationalization and justification. That is how one logically discusses. Slavery has no alternative, whereas the draft has an escape clause. if you renounce your citizenship to the country that has enlisted you, you dont have to be drafted.

You can't draft someone who isnt a citizen into the military. Of course renouncing citizenship also means you lose the right to retain residency in that country, and it is hard to draft someone who isnt there right?

So it's not written, as far as you know? Then nice stretch.

I think that hindsight is 20/20, that is an ineffective argument. The Goverment knew the numbers it would need in comparison with the numbers coming in voluntarily at the time and instituted the draft at that point. What is your point about WWII?

My point's not about WW2 but about the draft. It was a very popular war. We might have had enough volunteers to do the job. Going forward, we don't need any combat people at all to win an actual war. Boots on the ground are only necessary to win the peace, something we started in Japan. A draft isn't necessary to win a war anymore. Violating freedom in the name of freedom is hypocrisy.

I took a few seconds with google. You might want to read this.

I tried to find the relevant section of that site as it pertains to the draft. Maybe I missed something in my haste.
Whether we need a draft right now or not, is not a requirement for removing the process all together as it may still be necessary in the future. I will say again that it is a civic duty, and I as a citizen understand my responsibility.

There's nothing in there about the draft. That's my point. I don't know if you heard about your draft-dodging tip or just guessed, but the loophole doesn't exist.

You have a larger duty, assuming you are a US citizen, to preserve liberty and ensure the gov't aids in that duty.

Do you disagree with me that a draft isn't necessary anymore, even for a large-scale war?

Brilliant comment! BTW Accountable, most conservatives think that taxation is robbery. :D

You have a fundamental misunderstanding about slavery as compared to the draft. It's so fundamental, and you're so intransigent, there is no point saying any more. Whether anyone agrees with the draft or not based on a variety of standards or moral positions, you can't get away with calling it slavery. Give up, lol. :)

Translation: "I feel they're different but I don't know why. Since I can't explain it (and I'm afraid to challenge my own set opinions) I'll throw in a couple of big words like "intransigent" so I won't look as ignorant as I feel."

Focus on what we agree on, Minor.

This is more superiority complex, self serving BS (I'm talking about you.)

Agreed, this is the only way forward.
