I believe this was a question asked of the many Republican candidates before Mr. McCain became the chosen one... what do you all think? Do you believe the Bible is the written Word of God, and absolutely, 100% true?

Mmmm

My answer may be different in a couple of months as I'm currently reading the bible with one of my children (how I helped create anyone with a religious leaning in them is a complete mystery to me).

My current (and maybe future) opinion is that the book is a collection of largely well meaning stories bought together by the prophets at that time to be a kind of guide, at a time when there wasn't much of one, to people on how to lead a better life.

I was once advised by a more religious person than I that they largely follow the principles of the book but don't take it 100% literally and follow EVERY part of it. Maybe because that would be extremely difficult to do since there are parts of it that (allegedly) contradict other parts.

Who needs a bible when we have Darwins Theory of Evolution? lol

Seriously I'm 26 years old and after being raised as a church goer I still can't find it in me to believe everything in the bible.

I believe it's a good story book and does have a few bits of good advice but I think it's completely metaphorical and think all the miracles etc would be real in the context of the time it was written but now, I think Jesus would just be a great anatomist.

How I take the bible isn't really covered by the poll choices so I can only explain.

I truly believe it was inspired by people who believed there was a god. For me the bible is a wonderful book of moral code. I myself live by "Christian" values though I don't believe in a supernatural being of any flavour. It is a book of metaphors. If you knew anything about ancient texts you would know that metaphorical narration was the style. To believe in the bible literally is pure folly and any people doing so are only deluding themselves. Anybody is free to believe anything they want but don't dare tell me it's true, because to claim truth requires proof to be accepted.

If you had just crawled out from under a rock (metaphorically, no pun intended) and found the bible on a bookshelf somewhere and started reading it, mind you you have never heard of the bible, god, christianity, etc, you would probably say something along the lines of, "hey this is load of HORSE..." well, I think you get the rest (I may not be too religious, but I'm not blashphemous, just in case there is a God!!)

Its true....dont you dare tell me its not. ;) I dont have to prove anything to you. The proof is there within the scriptures for anyone who wants to take off their spiritual blinders and look. I liken it to being color blind..I can show you the color blue all I want but you will only see brown. You trust what only what you see and refuse to accept any evidence presented to you by scores of people who claim its blue. You are color blind....blind being the operative word. You do not want proof regarding the things of God. No matter what you see, you will stubbornly cling to your own belief because doing anything else requires you to humble yourself and admit that you're a sinner in need of God's forgiveness. Its not my responsibility to force you to believe so dont blame me (or Christians in general) and say that its because you havent been shown any proof. Jesus Christ could come and stand before you and speak to you face to face and you would explain it away as a hallucination..purely chemical in essence. So lets not pretend that you would ever accept any proof shared with you by others.

I am sorry if thats harsh, Jim. We've been through this before and i'm not about to tiptoe around your feelings because I know that our friendship is not at stake if I am open with you, just as you are always open with me on this subject.

I hesitate to get too involved in any of these religious debates. But i still have very strong opinions and like to toss them out there once in awhile. I'm always open to pm's if anyone wants to talk about it, though. :)

I think if there was more faith in this world - faith in ANYTHING, not just God, the world would be a better place.

It's not harsh - just wrong.

Every single thing you said above is built upon the assumption that there is a god. Since there is no proof of god you have no right to claim such a concept as "true". A belief, yes. This is not just niggly-piggly head-butting of religion vs. logic. It is a matter of fact.

And don't worry about my feelings; they are not nearly as sensitive as you may believe they are. ;)
