Different words for ones we are used to

Hoover is the name a company that produces vacuum cleaners.

What's it called when a brand name becomes the staple term? Because that's what happened. I presume they are a british company.

We have the Hoover brand here, too. I've just never heard it referred to as hoovering vs vacuuming. Not personally anyhow. I know people use it.

Other brand things- Q-tips, Band Aids... I'll ask for a bandage and people look at me like I'm crazy.

Some people from Downtown Chicago call it Highway too. I got used to both Highway and Tollway! So when I moved to California- and called it Highway- they were laughing at me. Highways for them are certain local roads- i still get confused what they call highways here to be honest. L0L

I forgot really which State calls it 'comfort room'. All I can remember is we always do long drives from IL to NY and one time all the way to Florida. We did some stop over and is when I heard the word comfort room. So i guess one of those States somewhere :willy_nilly:

Ok, so you don't all hoover... I blame my exposure to bad American/British tv shows (Not that all shows are bad... just that in my youth our broadcaster only bought rights for the crappy/cheapest stuff)

Band Aids... I'll ask for a bandage and people look at me like I'm crazy.

Here bandages are the long, fabric goodies one would use to strap up a large injury... the little stick on band aid jobs are called plasters.
