Debate Tournament Discussion Thread

At least they'll still pop up in New Posts, wherever they are.

Sometimes they don't always pop out :( Or maybe bcoz after a while- like for myself when I am not logged on a lot, or if no one has newly posted anything THEN I have to literally search it by the topic's designated location to find it :willy_nilly:

The lack of visibilty on these specific limited time debate threads makes it that much more unlikely that people will read them and even vote on them. Going by the comments from the last tournie, it was hard enough when they were in general. How much more so now that they are here.

The key point being limited time.

I agree  And speaking for myself before I participated in this debate and despite that it was at General Discussion, I didnt bother to look or read it unless I was interested in the topic. Let alone even bothered to participate in voting. I had the wrong impression then that only the participants had to vote :willy_nilly:

IF the threads needed to be at the Debate section- can it be requested maybe that the voting thread be placed at General discussion and from the title itself make it known that anyone can particpate? :dunno: Just maybe a suggestion ;)

:eek Drama Queen ( DQ) :p My turn to call you this :24:

Debate threads should be in the debate section, however after 3 weeks of debate tournament, 8 specific debate threads and one sideline thread no one even suggested the event was taking place in the wrong section. Mods have participated, voted and commented on the tournament, suggesting that the threads were not out of place at all.

The specific placement of the threads in the general discussion section is to make sure they are read by as many people possible and there will be enough votes, since the threads are active for limited time only. Too few cast votes was a problem in the last tournament and sadly moving the threads to a less visited section will not help this cause.

Therefore, I would suggest a compromise:

Move the debate threads to the debate section AFTER they had been concluded and the results of the voting are done. Like this, the threads would be read by as many people as possible and with the conclusion of the tournament would be placed in the correct section.

This is a good suggestion too :D:thumbup

And at title for the voting thread make it alert everyone that ANYONE can vote as I was misled by that wrong impression then that ONLY partcipants can vote hence I didn't bother to vote, which is my bad :willy_nilly:

"Games", I could see.

"Philosophy and Debate"? Yeah... this won't end well.

For one- you can forget getting a substantial number of votes as a large chunk of users, like me, tend to avoid this place.

I didn't catch it last time, but I did this time. There's a debate area for a reason and the people interested in debate frequent that forum. Now, I'll go find those other threads and move them, too, now that I know about them.

Just out of curiosity...

Why is it that a MOD could actually participate in the last one and at least one other MOD could vote and help me with cleaning up a thread in the tournament and they don't see a problem but you do and suddenly it's all moved?

This randomness and seeming lack of coordination between the MOD squad is a bit of a problem. MOD A and B say that it's all cool, but MOD C decides it's not and goes in with a hatchet, clearing everything out.

Where is the expectation for some sort of stability?

Ok, For some reason - people are still reporting posts that they should not be. If you can not handle this area, dont post in it. Yall wanted LAX rules, and you got it. The ONLY way that someone will get an infraction in this area is if they NAME CALL.. MEANING- JOE, your an asshole. Or something like that. if they accuse you of being catholic, so the fuck what! That is NOT name calling. If you keep reporting stupid stuff, we will email you about it, then start infracting for not listening to us. Its really petty alot of the stuff that is reported. Hell, I know that I cant handle this area, so I stay away from it.

Thats all. :) Carry on debating

This is the first post in the Debate section, dated Feb 5.

I bring your attention to the highlighted area, where it says if you don't want to be in here, don't come in here.

The reason I started the first Debate Tourney was that I wanted some intelligent conversation without having to deal with maZur and his ilk that slither around this sub-forum.

However, since I am now involved in a debate and that debate has been randomly moved into this section I am forced to come into this section, against the express orders of the site owner, the esteemed V.

Still wondering why....

Thank you too Siph, it was fun :)

It's got me wondering after I just read Retro's comment for people to vote not on who they agreed with but who argued better, whether you could take two people and have one of them argue a really distasteful side to a debate, one that almost everyone would normally condemn, and then see if they can win it by being better at arguing their side. You know, if the other person technically had the 'good' side, but wasn't very good at arguing it.

It'd be really interesting to see if people would vote for the better debater regardless, or invent reasons why the person they agreed with should win :p

Maybe that should be the next tournament. Think you're good? Get people to vote for the support of puppy-killers :ninja

Anybody that has trod in a puddle of puppy piddle at 2AM would vote for you. :D

Soo.... rebuttal posted - your turn Peter. ..... now I can prepare for my final statement :willy_nilly:

By the way - I don't know if anyone else is, but I am subscribed to all of the debate threads as to not miss any posts and be bale to easily find the threads. I am pointing this out because I only recently discovered, mainly because I was actually looking for it, that you can subscribe to a thread without posting in it first... I was oblivious to this tool before. :24:

... Peter was past the 24 hour mark too... I still asked retro to continue the debate. I was just having too much fun debating and wouldn've been disappointed if it was cut short :willy_nilly:

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter Ana :( I am hoping she'll feel better soon.

I don't really mind If it's past the 24 hour mark- If you wanted to proceed we can. It's entirely up to you if despite what's going on with your daughter, you'll still be able to find time to compose a rebuttal. Of course the decision depends on Retro also given he's the moderator of the debate :dunno:

I am cool with anything ;)
