Debate Tournament Discussion Thread

Yeah guys....Im talkin the dim, dark ages here.....I would have NO idea how they do them these days....

You would be given the topic....what side you were to argue on....then an hour or so to prepare your argument...couldnt even go to the school library to access info.

You were allowed to take notes whilst the debate was going....but that was it.

I was always in a team though....never an individual debate.

Never participated in a high school debate team as it would have interfered with my heavy schedule of getting stoned and listening to Pink Floyd.

However, I did go through Case Presentation while in law school.

There, you were given your case and a date/time where you would appear before the bench. You then lived in the library, researching every possible curve ball the opposition could throw your way.

You would go before the bench and argue one side, say the Prosecution. Then, they would call a recess and you would switch tables and be expected to argue the Defense to a fresh set of judges. Therefore, you needed to know the argument, the counter-argument and the counter-counter-argument for every possible contingency.

Afterward, they would release their verdict in each case.

If you were on the losing side for BOTH cases (prosecution and defense) ... well... the world needs court stenographers too... or at least once did. :p

Im talking 6th Grade....NO WAY would I have debated in High School....Geeez.....Dag much:p;)

I stuck to sport once I reached HS...unless it got me a day off....then I joined the Choir too.

yeah.... and now nobody is going to fucking see them. We had the last debate tournament in the general discussion area. I see no bloody reason why this one should be any different.
I didn't catch it last time, but I did this time. There's a debate area for a reason and the people interested in debate frequent that forum. Now, I'll go find those other threads and move them, too, now that I know about them.

I just find it highly amusing that you somehow missed three weeks of debate tournament threads. Hell, we had a mod participate in the last one... Nobody moved them or said they should be in another location. Then I start up a second one and they all go poof to debate. you would think that the lack of action by the rest of the staff would imply that there wasn't an issue. But apparently that either isn't the case, or...

The lack of visibilty on these specific limited time debate threads makes it that much more unlikely that people will read them and even vote on them. Going by the comments from the last tournie, it was hard enough when they were in general. How much more so now that they are here.

The key point being limited time.

Hmmmmmm. Not sure why they're all in the GD area. I'm moving them all to the debate area, guys. ;)

Debate threads should be in the debate section, however after 3 weeks of debate tournament, 8 specific debate threads and one sideline thread no one even suggested the event was taking place in the wrong section. Mods have participated, voted and commented on the tournament, suggesting that the threads were not out of place at all.

The specific placement of the threads in the general discussion section is to make sure they are read by as many people possible and there will be enough votes, since the threads are active for limited time only. Too few cast votes was a problem in the last tournament and sadly moving the threads to a less visited section will not help this cause.

Therefore, I would suggest a compromise:

Move the debate threads to the debate section AFTER they had been concluded and the results of the voting are done. Like this, the threads would be read by as many people as possible and with the conclusion of the tournament would be placed in the correct section.
