I'm not for embalming either. I'm Muslim and in my religion ebalming is forbidden. A Muslim should be buried within 24 hours after death, if possible. We don't use coffins either, we just wrap the dead body in a shroud and bury it in earth. So I'm not really familiar with the other styles of funerals.

Each country as well as each religion has their own method and as far as I'm concerned too each their own.

Even if that land was available, I doubt that it would be used for homeless shelters.

I used that as an example. I suppose I could have said mosque, temple, church or whatever. ;)

Did you know that you can have a funeral for a cremated person as well? Families may even bury the remains, so it's just like a regular burial except that it takes less space and is cheaper.

Yes I knew that. We did that with my late brother-in-law cuz that's what he wanted.

For me I want to be baked well and my ashed dumped in the Pacific ocean which is about 40 minutes from my house btw. I do not want to end up as a maggot ranch. Not that it would matter in the long run. It's just the idea of being eaten by worms and things. :eek

But anyway, in this thread I wasn't arguing which is better, I just asked for opinions.

Argument? This is a discussion, not an argument.... so far. :D

Bury me whole & plant an apple tree over me, no embalming etc.

Green burials are becoming more common & I believe that there are some states in the US that allow them under certain circumstances. While you are alive your body uses up & retains a lot of materials that are very useful to other lifeforms such as plants, insects, worms, bacteria & in the long term to the mammals, reptiles & birds that feed on these, which ultimately leads back to us.

Burning your body releases all its energy at once & actually robs the Earth of this resource & at the same time may contribute to global warming (if you believe some questionable opinions). It definitely does not help the planet.

My grandmother is being cremated and made into gems for the family... I like the sentiment behind it and plan on doing the same thing... after I've donated all my valuable organs, giving my body to science, then i will be cremated and made into family heirlooms :)

That is something to think of. I wasn't aware that the US was going green that way. I hear of all of the violence that goes on behind the scenes once they put the trocar (sp) to you and pump chemicals in you. However you've passed on and it becomes pretty moot.

Garrison Keillor said it pretty good when he mentioned that the really great mushrooms come from the grave sites of people who lived the good life. :)

That's the idiocy of most law. Why on earth wouldn't a government allow nature to take its course within health guidelines?? I could be wrong, but I've heard that embalming is required even if the plan is to cremate the body!
