It's a sad and growing problem - I've read a lot about it happening in the UK. Bullies are cowards of the worst kind, they only pick on targets who won't fight back.

What makes you think they are a growing problem? There's always been bullies and there will always be bullies. The only thing different is you hear about it a hell of a lot quicker in today's world.

So true. Bullying has been around since the beginning of time probably. It's just that now with the internet and media attacking it we are hearing more about it everyday. It truly is sad though with what is happening in this world...

the statistics show that in the UK anyhow, child suicide due to bullying is on the rise. Of course there have always been bullies, but in the UK there seems to be more than ever before.

Yep, bullying is nothing new. It's human nature, people like to mistreat other people.

I highly doubt bullying is drastically on the rise. It's most likely just that bullying is starting to become the subject of more and more statistics and studies.

Well I think that in a way you're right because it's being more focused on now. If people has focused their attention on this many years ago it probably would be decreasing now. I don't think it's on the rise. It's just getting noticed more and studied more.

If the kids didn't have access to instant news nor dragging councilors into the schools at every whim maybe the stats wouldn't be going up. Kids of all ages hear and know much more today than they should.

One other tidbit that I believe in Ed .................

Parents don't teach little Johnny or Suzie to stick up for themselves anymore. It's all about " report it to someone". Fuck that... if someone tried bullying me as a kid I dropped the gloves and was ready to get at it. Sometimes I won and sometimes I lost but never did the same kids try it again.

fyi I got bullied as a kid a lot for two reasons... ) I was always overweight ) I stuttered so bad my parents couldn't understand me. The moral here Ed is I lived it so don't come back at me with " wtf would you know ".

I can't believe this has turned into a debate of any kind. I couldn't give a flying fuck whether it's on the rise or on the fall, or whether kids just are better at telling nowadays. This is a serious issue that affects kids all over the world and I can now see why - it seems most adults don't give a fuck.

Typical Ed at it again. Quit being so fucking dramatic. It isn't going to change. Bulling will always be a way of life. Kids do it, adults do it, leaders of countries do it.

That "It isn't going to change" attitude is the reason for most of the problems in the world Guyzerr. Clearly you're happy being part of the problem.

This sure turned into a pissing match. If I had known ed was going to get up on a high horse I would have put this in debate.

Ed it's not going to change. It's been going on for many many years and unless people change the bullying won't. I don't see people changing any time soon. Guy is right. Even the leaders in almost every country are bullying each other. We learn by example and there's no one teaching...

I only "got up on my high horse" because of my surprise at the total lack of reaction to this. I'm sorry for having a pulse, but I've witnessed much bullying over the years and I can't stand it. It's one of the ugliest human traits our festering societies have produced so far.

As for it not going to change, change starts with one person. Change how you feel about it. And then spread the word. This could easily be changed if people understood the causes of bullying, which is quite simply: high self-esteem.

If you you encounter anyone with a superiority complex of any kind, just talk to them, make them realise that they're not so special. You never know who you might be helping in the future.

Yeah right. Anyone that has a superiority complex will probably kick your ass if you try to reason with them. And that right there is the problem. Not many people in this world change. You certainly can't force change. Not even by putting someone in jail. That's why there's so many repeat offenders. And even if you can change 1 person there's no guarantee that person will pass it on to another bully for fear of getting whooped on. The world just doesn't work that way...

I've come back to this post because what you've said is actually quite interesting. You're immediately associating bullying with criminal behaviour. You'd be surprised at how many bullies end up as successful business people - it's actually a very common trait in boardrooms all around the world.

Maybe I'm fortunate that my stature makes people think twice before having a go, but I see this problem as something that can be overcome by all everyone.

When I said about talking to the person with the superiority complex, I'm not saying just go up to a random thug in the street - that'd be insane. What I'm talking about is people you know. Everyone knows some person who bullies others, be it in a physical manner or in an emotional one. It takes many forms. And it's easy to spot: if you know anyone that pushes and air of superiority over others, or over a group (racism, for example) it's not difficult to use your position as a friend to try and change them. I've had friends who bullied other friends and I can happily say I've changed a few situations in that regard. And racism too - it's not hard to point out the errors in someone's behaviour.
