Breastfeeding at 8?

IMO Breastfeeding should stop once the child gets teeth!!

Thats a little over the top a woman feeding her child at the age of 8 theres no seperation there to begin with and not to mention the fact that child is not getting what it needs from the other things its supposed to eat... and its just down right ew

Exactly what I think. There is something a little disturbing about this. The guest on pg one had a good point, what if it were an 8 year old boy? Surely that would be considered inappropriate, why is it different just because it's a girl?

Not only that, but they say that if they were to actually try, men could breastfeed, too.

As for the original topic at hand, the only reason there's a debate here is b/c it's breastfeeding and breastfeeding is supposed to be so good for children (I'm not saying it's not...I agree). If this were an 8 year old walking around w/ a bottle or a pacifier everybody would be saying "she's too big to be sucking on a bottle, what are her parents thinking!?!?!?"

Personally I think that children don't need anything else to make them "different" from the other kids...and sucking on your mother's breast at 8 years old is definitely different. You have to draw the line at some point.

it's a much different story once you're in the situation
I'm sure it will be, but I'm sure also that it's different for different peolpe. There is no set time when you are suppsoed to be done. I'm going to let my child take the lead and she will let me know when she is ready to ween. I just don't believe in forcing solids on a kid at 4 months old when their digestive systems aren't ready for it. Who knows, I might not go two years, but I am not opposed to it either.

women in 3rd world countries breast feed their children well into the age of 5, i dont see what the big deal is. she is providing nutrition for her child.

It's because we americans have preconceived notions about sexuality and breasts and society has trained us to look down on anything that could possibly be perceived as perverted or weird...but really that's because of how many perverts and weirdos we hear about in the news every day, so we just assume anyone who does something like that must be one of those types of people.

Would I do it? No! But really, to each his/her own. And I agree that in other less developed countries it was more out of necessity than it is here. They don't HAVE lots of food and if it comes to letting your kid starve, or letting them have some milk, then I can surely see the logic in feeding them breastmilk.

It's all how you were raised and who you are around. I know some people who think breastfeeding at all is gross and absurd. Then I know a group of women who all breastfeed their toddlers till they are 3 or 4. I love the internet for broadening my circles of friends and allowing me to see other perspectives and become more open minded about things like this.
