Mockingjay - Suzanne Collins

Interestingly, I just finished the second of the Hunger Games books called Catching Fire. I really can't critique it without dropping some heave duty spoilers, but it gets a thumbs up. Seriously, if you plan on reading the series stop right here...

I just could not believe she and Peta and most of the previous victors ended up back in the arena!! For a while I felt deflated regarding the story, however I recovered, am happy with the ending and looking forward to the final book. I need to reread the ending again...

Minor Axis - I had the same feeling
when they went back into the arena, I was a bit disappointed because it felt like 'oh we resolved this in the first book but now we need some drama for the second one... let's throw you back in!'. I did enjoy it after it got past that initial sense of repeating itself.

Yes I thought it was quite repetitive. In Catching Fire, I was really put off by the sheer amount of recap. It seemed to go on for ages until something actually happened and even then it was pretty much the same thing as before! I didn't enjoy Mockingjay much, my main thought was "meh" and I just stopped caring what happened to the characters.

To be honest, I think The Hunger Games would have been a lot better as a stand alone novel. To end on a slight cliffhanger, where anything could happen - like Battle Royale did.

Yes! I probably would have been happy just reading the first book and leaving it at that, in light of the second two. I didn't hate them but I didn't think Mockingjay was anywhere near as good as The Hunger Games. It almost feels like she was rushed to get a trilogy out - seems like having a series of books, particularly for young adults, is a big deal at the moment.

Yes I agree about trilogies, or book series, being a big thing. I think if you are going to write a series, you've got to tread carefully. It's got to be similiar so that the audience can enjoy all the characters etc that they enjoyed in the first one BUT it has to be different and the characters have to grow. The Hunger Games got too repetitive and the characters of Peeta, Gale and Katniss just became a bit unlikeable. Towards the end, I thought Katniss to be really whiney and annoying and MOCKINGJAY SPOILER WARNING ALERT: I just didn't really care about Prim's death because I don't think we ever really get to know the character. She was always there in the background and althought we got told she was so lovely, so nice etc etc, I never became attatched to her (if you know what I mean)

I think Sookie Stackhouse has gone the same way. The series is being dragged out and it's all a bit too reptitive. I'm now finding myself not excited that a new book is out but I probably will read them eventually just because I started the series.

I feel exactly the same about Prim. I really wanted to like her as a character, but her death didn't affect me hardly at all, and I don't normally need much excuse to cry about characters I'm attached to :p

Ditto on Sookie Stackhouse as well. Really enjoyed the books at first but I haven't got the newest one yet, can't get excited about it. There's no shame in just ending something, but I guess while people still buy them, they want to keep churning them out.

Glad I wasn't the only one unmoved by it!

There is only 1 more Sookie Stackhouse book to go. Ive read The Harper Connelly mysteries, also by Charlaine Harris, and they finished at book 4 and I thought were a lot better. I didn't like the last book because of where it went but the other 3 were strong. I have another series by her, The Lily Bard Mysteries, in my To-Read Box.
