Atheists Better Educated? NEVER!

So just to be clear, am I right in thinking the OP was saying atheists are generally better educated necessarily, but that atheists tend to be better educated about religion?

It seems like most of the posts have gone on the first interpretation rather than the second, but I'd say whether atheists are generally more educated than religious folks is also going to depend on things like which country you're in.

I assumed the op meant better educated about religion rather than better educated in general

Not believing in a religion in no way means you dont know about it. I have a huge interest and knowledge of murderers but it in no way means I think they were right to murder.

I've read the entire bible and the entire qu'ran.
I actually read them as a piece of interpretive literature, and as such came to the conclusion that the Bible is a great book, and religion is a powerful tool - truly man's greatest creation.

I agree with Zorak and Peter, I might not be religious but religion itself is an interesting subject. You can learn a lot about something without being part of the experience yourself. Hell, we'd have a lot of trouble interpreting ancient cultures if that weren't true.

That's true. A religious education plays an important part in plenty of things. I have a huge interest in history, especially British history. Imagine trying to understand a huge, key moment in our history, the Reformation and for years afterwards the wars, rebellion and affect it caused without understanding religion?

absolutely, Religion was and still is an ingenious way to control the masses through fear and make a bit of money which I find extremely interesting. I find it very interesting how rules within religions changed over years to suit the thinking of the time or the different agendas of the religious groups.

Animal sacrifice, pedophilia, sex with animals, self mutilation and the list goes on. But as we evolve and our knowledge expands we leave the dark ages behind, where they belong.
The more advanced the civilization, the further they distance themselves from the fairy tales of the past. Just as we no longer believe in fire breathing dragons and fairies, future generations will look back at this time and laugh at you believers. :dunno

Seriously? You really need to work on your reading comprehension. Let me see if I can explain my post to you in such a way that you can follow the bouncing ball.

The further you go back in history, the greater the atrocities perpetrated by religion and their followers.
The more enlightened civilizations get, the further they stray from these beliefs and practices.
One day we will be smart enough to see religion as the fairy tale that it is and stop believing it as if it were reality.
Until that day comes for the rest of you, us atheists will stand alone in the truth. :dunno

Someone's educational level and belief in God are easy to determine. So it's a simple matter to do a statistical survey to demonstrate atheists, on average, are better educated than theists.

Intelligence is another matter. There are different kinds of intelligence and tests are biased. While it is possible atheists are more intelligent than theists, I expect it is difficult to demonstrate that with confidence.
