Basically it turns out that atheists know more about religion than the religious. Seemingly, this better understanding of religion is what leads people to atheism.

"Atheism is an effect of that knowledge, not a lack of knowledge. I gave a bible to my daughter. That's how you make atheists"

I guess it could also be because atheists are more likely to take interest in learning about other religions, whereas I'd guess a lot of religious people have little interest in learning more about other options.

It's an interesting thing to think about. Are people atheists because they know a sufficient amount about many religions that they realise their value?

Or...

Is it that atheists are naturally inclined to investigate and think rationally?

I went to a Catholic School. I can never get tired of reliving the moment when I got kicked out of RE class for questioning why we were learning about other religions when we were as a Catholic School. Turned out it was part of the cirriculum. I also ate that bread once they give you in Church, fucking horrible.

I'd go with option 2, I don't know a whole lot about other religions bar Catholicism (as I was born into that one) I never really believed it though and don't like the whole organised religion thing, because of this it has made me curious about other religions, not that I'm looking for a religion but they do fascinate me.

I find a lot of religious people tend to have a good knowledge of other religions because they like picking them to pieces as much as athiests. When it comes to their own religion and the glaring mistakes though, they prefer to bury their head in the sand.

This video and arguments don't make sense, since there are Christian scientists...oh another failure from atheists again :24:

all those questions were easy as fuck, but I disagree about Atheists being BETTER EDUCATED than religious people, I just think that people tend to be more learned on things that they are AGAINST than things that they actually believe in, they want to be able to win an argument on the subject so they learn all they can about it, all the education in the world can't really instill logic and common sense into a person. There are MANY highly educated religious people, their level of education really has little or nothing to do with it.

that argument makes even less sense.

and statistically, the higher qualified a scientist you are, the less likely you are to be Christian, and the less likely you are to hold any belief in a God of any kind.

The statistics speak for themselves: there is a direct correlation between being more educated and not believing in God.

Yup.

the "statistics" based off one biased study, gtfo with that, I'm sure there are studies out there that "prove" that Christians on average are more educated than everyone else, that doesn't make it so, some of the most intelligent people I've ever met are also highly religious, and some of the DUMBEST people I've ever met are also highly religious, the same thing with atheists, like I said before all the books, all the lectures, all the schooling in the world can NOT instill logic and common sense into a person's brain, some of the most intelligent people ever to live have also been BATSHIT CRAZY, all this is was some people with a vendetta against religion trying to find any way they possibly can to shit on religious people as human beings, not on their religion but as HUMAN BEINGS and it is just pathetic, to say that a person MUST be stupid and uneducated because they believe in a higher power is just ridiculous as there are JUST AS MANY uneducated atheists as there are uneducated religious people. And this is coming from someone who DOESN'T BELIEVE IN GOD and is NOT RELIGIOUS in the slightest.

You love to boost your fucking ego don't you? I'm not an atheist and am open to many things. BUT I'm not your standard shmuck who gets sucked into religion. I hate religion and will never let it control me. But I believe in God and the supernatural.

Ok first off I didn't say, and neither did anyone else in this thread, that a person is "dumb and uneducated" just because their religious. You're right, this would be a very unfair view.

There will always be exceptions to any rule, especially where people and the infinite varieties of their personalities comes into play, but the trend is quite simple: being educated, especially about multiple religions, and you're less likely to believe in the magical sky-father.

Nothing to do with boosting ones ego, Dana. Your weighty contribution is appreciated, as always.

I didn't say you did say that, I was referring more to the video and just my real life experience with a lot of atheists, they don't ALL do that but a lot of them do and it is infuriating.

And I think it has less to do with being educated and more to do with being sane and having common sense, look at say Osama Bin Laden, a highly educated man who lives in a cave and murders people in GODS name, you can be an absolute genius but that doesn't mean you're not a raving lunatic who believes in a magical sky father who wants you to kill everyone who doesn't believe.

yeah that's true. The stance of atheists can often be incredibly condescending.

I find anti-religion fanatics to be just as annoying as religious fanatics, actually maybe a little bit moreso because you can't even use a figure of speech like "Thank God" or "For the love of God" around them without them trying to start some ridiculous religious debate over it, why can't we all just accept that we don't all believe the same things and live and let live?
