my opinion of course
lets face it,if i use petrol/gas as an example.you pay well under the odds.....if a tax doubled the price it still wouldn't bring you in line with most other western countries

You could not ridicule a country you don't not live in. How about that?

We also consume a heck of a lot more of it and we refine the oil into gasoline. Not to mention we spend a buttload of money on protecting these oil producing countries.
Let's face it, your fuel tax is just ridiculous.

I was thinking something similar. Except I was thinking "It's ironic to receive political advice from a country that still has a Queen."
You do realize that the vast majority of our workers commute via car, right? The average one-way commute for a middle-class American worker is 30 miles, which is 300 miles a week. Most cars get around 300 miles on a tank of gas if it's mostly highway driving. So, if you take a mid-sized sedan, with a 16.5 gallon tank (like mine), you're looking at about $63/week on gas (based on $3.79/gal, which is what I pay), for commuting alone, not to mention everything else that you need a car for. So, if we were to bring our gasoline taxes in line with say, Britain, then we'd be looking at around $150 a week on gas. That wouldn't ever fly here, no way. On average, we drive a whole lot more (and not just for convenience) than most any other country in the world. A good part of that is due to the fact that people live in the suburbs and commute to work, in order to live in a less crowded area. I'm lucky right now because I drive all of about a mile each way to work and back, but if I get the job I've been interviewing for, I'll be driving 50 miles each way for work for the first 6-9 months. I couldn't afford that if I was looking at $9/gal gasoline.
But that brings me to another question... why do you care? Why should we pay as much in taxes as European countries do? Is it not fair that we pay less money for it than other countries? What's the reasoning?
i travel 21 miles each way to work,5 days a week.the trick is not to have something that does 20 to a gallon but 50 to a gallon..you drive a mile to work?....thats ridiculous
