if govt were efficient, it would not need to take so much tax from the worker
leaving more cash in the workers pocket wherby he/she could spend more boosting the economy, creating jobs in the long term

no govt should have free reign on taxes

We also consume a heck of a lot more of it and we refine the oil into gasoline. Not to mention we spend a buttload of money on protecting these oil producing countries.

You could not ridicule a country you don't not live in. How about that?

I was thinking something similar. Except I was thinking "It's ironic to receive political advice from a country that still has a Queen."

Good to see Americans living up to their stereotypical arrogance. The nerve of any non- American having an opinion about their country! :p Carry on......

You do realize that the vast majority of our workers commute via car, right? The average one-way commute for a middle-class American worker is 30 miles, which is 300 miles a week. Most cars get around 300 miles on a tank of gas if it's mostly highway driving. So, if you take a mid-sized sedan, with a 16.5 gallon tank (like mine), you're looking at about $63/week on gas (based on $3.79/gal, which is what I pay), for commuting alone, not to mention everything else that you need a car for. So, if we were to bring our gasoline taxes in line with say, Britain, then we'd be looking at around $150 a week on gas. That wouldn't ever fly here, no way. On average, we drive a whole lot more (and not just for convenience) than most any other country in the world. A good part of that is due to the fact that people live in the suburbs and commute to work, in order to live in a less crowded area. I'm lucky right now because I drive all of about a mile each way to work and back, but if I get the job I've been interviewing for, I'll be driving 50 miles each way for work for the first 6-9 months. I couldn't afford that if I was looking at $9/gal gasoline.

But that brings me to another question... why do you care? Why should we pay as much in taxes as European countries do? Is it not fair that we pay less money for it than other countries? What's the reasoning?

I drive a car that gets 30MPG on the highway... so your point there is moot. Also, please try living there and then tell me it's ridiculous for me to drive my car a mile to work. When I go to work in the mornings during the summer it's already over 90° outside. Plus, I generally leave from work to go other places, like shopping, to get my son, etc. It would be horribly inefficient for me to walk to work, then walk home, and then leave again. I would've loved to have gotten a car that suited my needs and got 50MPG, but at that point I would've been looking at a hybrid, and I couldn't afford it. I could've gotten a subcompact or something to get 40MPG, but then I would barely have had enough room for having my son or other people in my car, along with the tools and such that I carry around for work.

It's ridiculous for you to make judgements without knowing any facts. You're making yourself look like a total and complete idiot here. Just because you Brits don't have an issue paying an absurd amount of taxes on your fuel, doesn't mean that Americans would stand for it. Past the average commuter, you haven't factored in trucks. The vast majority of our commerce moves via the road on trucks. It would cripple our economy even further if we were to triple the price of diesel through more taxation. These are things that you don't have a clue about because you don't live here... but hey, continue to pass judgement about things you have no understanding of. But hey, keep talking out of your ass... it's giving me a laugh at least.

Jesus Christ.
