What do you think about it? I've seen my fair share of people that say they think it's some stupid excuse for kids to act up, and when they were kids, their parents just called them punks. So here it is, what do you think about it?

There definately is it and I've seen people with it too. I myself was wrongly diagnosed with it and put on ritalin for a while. I do think that there are too many cases of wrong diagnosis and kids being put on ritalin though which I think is bad as it makes it harder for people who genuinely have it to be taken seriously. Unfortunately this goes for a lot of mental illnesses which people quite frequently talk out of their arse about. There really needs to be a lot more truths and less prejudices presented about mental illnesses with less stereotypes!

I agree with all of that!
While I do believe there are people who really do have these conditions, it seems to be a trend (In SA, don't know about the rest of the world) where teachers 'diagnose' half their class as having ADD/ADHD. In these cases I think it has more to do with the teacher being unable to instill a level of discipline in her class than with the children actually having these disorders.

I also agree that Ritalin is prescribed way to often and too easily. If we were faced with our son being ADD/ADHD we would want to investigate other options of treatment.

These disorders exist, but I think there must be great care in diagnosing them in smaller children. Some children are either just "being kids" and some actually DO have it, but grow out of it. its a shame to medicate kids under those conditions.

I think most of these "disorders" are something that people just make up to give them a reason to give their kids a drug to calm them down. Now, I'm sure there are kids with issues, but I think these issues have become more inflated and inflated over the years. Everyone takes pills for something quite regularly compared to 20-30 years ago.

Well yeah, we've made several medical advancements since then and have medicine for things that we originally lacked.

But without these medicines, were these people really THAT much worse off without it? I hardly doubt it. I mean, sure, there are SEVERE accounts of it, and these, by all means, should be treated. But, our 8 year old son was almost put on some shit just because the damn Dr thought he was too hyper. We said no, he's fine. He's not going to die or anything, WOW. I mean, people just jump to medicine for EVERYTHING nowadays. It's pathetic.

The world just imploded. I agree.

20-30 years ago we didn't have the medical technology we do today which is why I'm sick of hearing "well 20-30 years ago we...", especially from people who aren't even 30 years old.

My bad, I'm only 29. To be honest, I'm tired of hearing, "Well, nowadays, we have this because we are more advanced, so, automatically it's better.", from people who are barely old enough to buy liquor.

Just because we invented it here recently, doesn't mean it's better.

I mean, let's load everyone who has a MINOR issue up with medicines, then, when they are 40, their liver will be shit. Good idea.

I didn't say it doesn't exist. I just said that most Drs and parents over react and give treatment to normal children for ADD and ADHD for no reason.

Well if they really had it, then yes. I know people that really have these disorders, and they would be worse off if they didn't have the medicine.

UUmmm... that's what I said. If they REALLY have it. Damn, you argue with me even when we say the same thing. Good job.

I have seen children with it, but in the same sense i have seen parents say, my child must have ADD cause they are always hyper... kids are kids and the real test is to see wether things settle down or not once they get older.
In saying that i also know an adult with ADD, a really good friend of mine has it and its a simple as trying to constantly change with the subjects and hyperactivity at the wrong times, hes a good guy and despite the fact he has it, and to be honest with you its a breath of fresh air to be around someone occasionally that is always going non stop =)

Well, ADD (without the hyperactivity) = lack of attention plus things such as procrastinating, I found out the other day.

ADHD (Is with hyperactivity) = lack of sleep (can be up to all hours of the night, early hours of the morning in most, not all), constantly on the go, unable to complete tasks, huge lack of short-term memory, but long-term memory fine, very strong lack of concentration, unpredictable in actions, lack of sense of fear and more. This all = my son.

For me, it took a few months before I decided to have my son take medication, after he was diagnosed. Then he stopped it for a long while and the difference without was unbelievable. He was all over the show again and as he had got older, the condition (not a mental health condition), was a lot worse. He went back on meds after a while off them and the difference again has been a relief. I barely coped with things (although pushed myself every day for the time he wasn't on it, cos no choice) when he wasn't on meds.

It's not the solution I wanted, but it helps in his case. We live with it and go with it most of the time. It can't be fought against. When they are 'on one' with ADHD (don't know much about ADD) they cannot see reason, or be rational and they have to be left alone to get through their rages themselves - then they tend to carry on as though nothing happened just before. That's how it is and is very hard to live with, but in a strange way you can get some routine and go with it more often than not - this however does take a very long time to get into doing.

We have a strange system/routine, but it works somehow. It's all trial & error til you find what works best. It's usually things you could never think would help too. A person looking in on our routine though, wouldn't think we have one.:D

Apart from all this and other things, he and I are a team and we are very close and happy. It does take time though and tons of perserverance! :)

It is never easy, but to 'get there' is so rewarding. ;)

i have add. and its been proven. blah blah blah.
ive always been a messy kid. room always a mess, my car would always have a bunch of crap in it. whatever.
i saw 2 different specialists and they both told me the same thing. then one prescribed me with progesterone cream. its a hormone cream that seriously makes you concentrate. my room is never a mess anymore, well my whole apartment is clean as hell and my car is always clean. i can actually focus and has actually helped curb my auditory-only learning ability. i can actually comprehend what i read now and not have my brain going 6 million different directions at once.

for anyone who has it or has a child with it adhd is debilitating and a living nightmare, and my heart goes out to anyone in that situation.thank goodness for medicationthat can actually help people lead better lives.
as for kids who act up as you say,i think thats down to posh rich people jumping on band wagons and not admitting they have something other than a medical problem ie a dysfunctional child.

I believe that it's very frequently misdiagnosed.
However, I also believe that the meds are completely and totally necessary for those who have the ailment.

I think if you have a child and the school suggests such a disorder that you would be wise to take them to a private child psychologist and have them evaluated privately.
Make sure that the psychologist is not affiliated with the school system too.
