No, I don't surround myself with alcoholics either. My friends and I drink responsibly, and I don't feel as though I am putting myself or anyone around me in trouble with the law when I go out and catch a buzz. If I was out every night getting blitzed, then I would see that being a problem.

Alcoholics=addicted to alcohol.... and I thought this wasn't about addictions, so I didn't bring that up
Neither are socially acceptable--but on the hierarchy or least offensive behavior, alcoholics are clearly above drug abusers because the latter are breaking the law--and most times they are also committing crimes apart from the drug use to support their habits. So I'd say alcoholics are more socially acceptable--the one exception to that are alcoholics that drive while intoxicated.
Anyone drinking in order to have a good time is doing the same thing any drug user / abuser does - seek a substance to cop a high. So why are they better than anyone else who uses? It's hypocritical.

Because using drugs is against the law for one thing. I don't NEED to go out and have alcohol to have a good time. If I chose to have a few beers while I'm out watching a game or having dinner, I have that right.

Because given the right moderation, alcohol doesn't always fuck you up? Drugs do. My grandpa goes through five or six beers a day, never even gets a buzz.

No, you don't need to. But you do anyways. And I bet you've driven after consuming alcohol before too. The law didn't stop you there.

Just like one seeking to get high off a joint, those who drink seek solace and recreation in a drink. No difference.

Isn't it amazing how something so legal causes so much death and destruction every year?

Under moderation, nothing's supposed to fuck you up.

I said in my other posts that I don't drink and drive. I have never driven when I would be considered over the limit, as my friends and I always have a designated driver. Don't jump to conclusions about me, please.

Well, you are from New Jersey, so there are a few conclusions we can jump to right off the bat!! :24:

While some of those other things may be true, I am totally anti-drugs. I'm a law abiding citizen, and I don't feel the need to debate any further on it ;)

Oh drugs being illegal is stupid. It's only irresponsible since it's a bullshit law to begin with.

Anyways, I'm kinda straight edge I guess. Not because I'm against booze/drugs, but just because I can't be arsed. I'll drink or smoke pot but in a lot of cases I'll only do it if I'm not paying. So there you go. That's my word.

Well it's kind of hard not to when you're at a bar in many pics posted on the site. I guess I honestly did just figure that yes, you have in fact exercised poor judgment at some point and you have consumed alcohol and then proceeded to get on the road. I have as well - most people I know have. There is nothing offensive intended here.
Driving after consuming is different than driving drunk, though--the former is lawful, the latter is not.

Stella--you NEED TO FOCUS HERE. I think 3 or 4 people have pointed out a major difference--one is lawful, the other is not--that's a BIG difference to many people--I realize its not to everyone and may not be to you, but it is significant.

Depends on the substance--many illegal drugs are highly addictive so even doing them in moderation leads to physical addiction.
lol

Alcohol impairs your judgment. Just like drugs. It doesn't impair your judgment any less harshly than some other drug. And you still get punished for overdoing it even though it is legal. In not so many words, the majority here is basically saying alcohol's ok because it's legal.

And no one else sees a problem here?

So basically the point of this thread is to insinuate that anybody that drinks and doesn't do drugs is stupid and hypocritical and should change their ways...is that about right???

So far we've gone in about 4 circles...I honestly don't see the point.

Moving to the Debate forum.

Anyone who drinks recreationally to get high and believes they're better than someone who may choose to smoke marijuana or use another substance instead is a hypocrite imo.

[/scene]

Great move.

I don't know about the rest of the people here...but personally I see a big difference between marijuana (AS LONG AS IT'S NOT LACED W/ ANYTHING ELSE) and other drugs like heroin, meth, and cocaine. Yes, their all illegal, but marijuana has many legitimate uses too. Personally I'm all for legalizing marijuana. That other shit, though...that's poison.

Yeah that's right you did say that.

Drunk driving is so prevalent. That's why you hear "don't drink and drive" more often than "don't drop acid and ride mopeds."

Come on Stella--you need to focus here again--what I said was that certain drugs are highly addictive--much more so than alcohol so you can't say that its all the same "in moderation." A substance's propensity for abuse is different than its propensity to impair.

No--you don't get punished by the law for overdoing it unless you drive. You can drink yourself into a stupor at home and not get arrested for doing it--not so with an illegal drug.

The Legislature has mandated it--Even though all of us may not agree with all the laws in society, we nevertheless respect them. So if the law says you can't do cocaine or Meth or marijuana or LSD, then most people respect that.

Perhaps you can tell us what problem you see.
Ok, so

GETTING HIGH IS OK

as long as it's only alcohol and the subject is above the legal age for consumption and there is no heavy machinery involved, right?

You actually can get involved for many illegal infractures for drinking to much. There is a law (forgot the name) that prohibits drinking more than X amount of alcohol.

It's not, you want it to be hypocritical to make yourself feel better about your drug use.

drinking will kill you as well.
Others in the process if on the road.

Drinking in moderation is harmless as long as you maintain judgement. In some cases it's even healthy. My impression is that Mary Jane in moderation is not bad either, but I don't know enough about it to be sure.

Even if you live the healthiest lifestyle ever, it's still gonna end some day :dunno
That last statement really helped me feel even more justified with my illicit drug use.
Thanks for that!
