I have a pretty strange stance on this kind of stuff with addictions

My mother smoked a lot but quit in her 60s' and lived into her 90's

I think a lot has to do with genes

I'm sure genes play a part in it but as far as I'm concerned a person has to have the will to quit smoking or it won't happen. I've never been addicted to anything else but I have to admit this is a tough one.

You'll shake your head when you read the following but I feel the need to " testify " about how addicted I was.

About 3pm on July 26, 2000 I was wheeled into the operating room where sawbones was waiting to slice and dice me. After a few hours the surgery was over and off to the recovery room I went. Some time during the night I was wheeled into my own room where with the help of some powerful drugs peacefully went to sleep. Over the next bunch of hours I woke up enough and called a nurse to help me out of bed. I had enough surgeries over the years to realize the sooner I was out of bed the sooner I went home. Anywhoo... she helped me sit up and I asked her to get me standing which she did. Then I axed her to help me get my gown on so I could go for a walk. We argued back and forth. I won because she believed me when I said it's with your help or me alone. Fast forward.. I'm pushing the IV pole down the hall and after about 20' the nurse said we should head back. I insisted we carry on which we did. ( I had a motive ) We got to a hallway door and she suggested we get back. Same argument and I won again ( remember I had a motive ). We kept walking to the end of the hall, turned around and made it back to my room. I was exhausted but by the evening I had my energy restored. I called a nurse and asked her to help me sit up and get out of bed. She did and I dressed myself. From there I walked from my 3rd floor room across the hospital, down the elevator and out the door where I promptly bummed a smoke. ( keep in mind I was higher than a kite due to the drugs ) I managed to get a smoke from someone and there I sat... a recent heart surgery patient of less than 24 hours sucking on a cigarette. Yes that right... I had just had open heart surgery. Like everyone on this planet I've done a lot of stupid things but that has to take the cake. I only told this story because it might make someone that smokes know how silly we can be. I'm not proud of it I'll tell you that.

because I have seen many people give up addictions to booze or smokes in their 50's and die within a couple years

If that makes no sense then me tomorrow :D

Just what I needed to hear. Thanks buddy ol' pal.

I knew one of you gals here did it and I couldn't remember who it was. Congrats to you.

Question... cold turkey or Champix like I'm using? ( man do I have some stories to tell about that stuff )

I trid champix and it ended up giving me the blues. The side effects can be like that for some people i was one of the lucky ones.
Im on patches only a month more of them to go and im finished!! :willy_nilly:

I can stand to be around smokers i actually enjoy the smell of the smoke itself BUT if someone walks past me once they have had one or a sit near an ashtray i feel like heaving that smell is rancid!

you can do it Dude!! more power to ya! and thanks :)

Mrs. Stinky... um.. I mean Mrs. Guyzerr surprised me this morning and said she had her last smoke. She bought a box of patches yesterday and I didn't even know. She has quite twice before so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Just think of all the camera gear I'll be able to buy after we are both done. :24:

goo d luck Guy

i quit 14 years ago using the patch, fist off i had a stong patch, wore it for a week, then switched ot for a lower dose patch, then after another week took it off and never touch a smoke since

the real craving went after about eight weeks, but to be honest i still miss it, you just learn to live without

i still miss smoking - i miss the mechanics of the draw the cool smoek the whole action of smoking, tbh if the cost came down and they discovered a guaranteed quick fix for lung cancer I would start again

Thanks porter.

I am feeling the effects of withdrawal today but so far I've avoided lighting up. I will beat this thing.

As of right now I really don't miss anything about it. That may change over time but I hope it doesn't. What I would like to accomplish is getting rid of the faint smell in my car. I always smoked with the windows open so it's not bad but it's enough to annoy me. I spent a good portion of last Sunday detailing the inside and washing everything that I could. I'll probably go out today and get a bunch of those stinky trees or something.

It's also nice not to be coughing when I get out of bed in the morning and to think it's not quite a week. :thumbup

Thanks fuzz....

I'm dealing with two side effects. I have a hard time going to sleep. The second one is the dreams. They are the most vivid, colorful, weird and wacky dreams I've ever had. They aren't scary, just insane is the best way to describe them. They leave me exhausted when I wake up but I'm happy to say they are diminishing in frequency and duration.

I didn't read the whole thread, so I apologize in advance if I say something that's already been said, LOL

Congratulations, Guy...that is awesome!!! I think it's encouraging for someone that quits to see how different their senses are now...makes you REALLY think about what you were doing to your body all those years, huh??? Even as a casual smoker I will say that the most difficult times are when having a cup of coffee or a big meal (Thanksgiving, particularly). BUT it's nothing you can't make it through. Keep up the good work!!!

Congrats! I also didn't read the whole thread, lol, because I'm a copycat, but it's awesome what you're doing.

I hope you're having an easier time than some do, like my mother. I've never smoked in my life and don't plan on so I can only imagine what you're going through.

try to see if you can rent an ozone machine from a fire restoration company Guy

It should do the trick

My brother and sister in law took that drug and they too had some serious issues with the dreams and a couple other side effects.

That was about 5 years ago. Did I mention about people dieing after quitting smoking and booze? Yeah I know I did. He is 70 years old and was a lifelong alcoholic and smoker. He has terminal brain cancer

I tell ya I aint gonna stop drinking :D

If it makes you feel any better on of my old roomates grandfather was told at the age of 50 to quit smoking and drinking or he would be dead in 2 years. He was an old boy farmer. He would close the bars at night and be up at dawn. He died in the field............... at the age of 85

I am having a wee bit of trouble but not near what I experienced when I tried to quit before and nothing I can't handle. It's actually a lot easier with the help of the drugs. The last time I tried this I was on Zyban. It was working but the side effects were to numerous to mention. I got off 'em before I killed someone.

I bought myself some in the vent airfresheners and in time the smell will go away.

I can believe that. After all it is a drug designed for some sort of mental issue(s) I believe. I haven't had the urge to kill myself so the rest is small potatoes.

Yes you did tell me that and I thanked you for the words of encouragement. ;)

Until you get brain cancer. :eek

My mother was a life long smoker and one day she got a bad cold. She quit smoking that day. She was either 84 or 85. She's 87 now and hasn't had one since. She says she still likes to smell it and stands as close as she can get when someone lights up. :24:

Good on you for quitting. I recall the heart surgery mention before but not the smoking bit. Never having smoked, I can't imagine the addiction/craving for it to want it that bad.
