I don't believe she intended to be patronuzing. As a parent when you deal with teenage children you do realize just how immature they really are at 16 or even 18. I think many here would have a different point of view if it was a 19 year old marrying a 16 year old. The fact that he is actually old enough to technically be her grandfather and she is so young is where the rub comes in for many of us. I would not have allowed my 16 year old daughter to date someone my age or older.

Interesting. I would think that an older man would be better able to look after your daughter and more likely to treat her well than some 19 year old kid.

I think they gave their consent. I can't remember what Maury said about Alabama's marriage laws but I think it was they could get married when he turned 14 but as he was under 16, his parents had to give their consent.

A bit like how in GB, I could get married at 16 or 17 but as I was under 18, my parents would need to give their consent.

Exactly. Personally I feel 16 is too young to get married anyway, but if it's to someone closer to their age it's much easier to accept.

When I was in high school there were two couples who got married as eleventh graders. They all graduated high school and were still married when we had our 30th high school reunion. I think it depends on the maturity level more so than a number but I would be hesitant to allow a teenager get married from what I have seen of teenagers recently. Those two couples I know for a fact have not had the easiest of times and they stuck it out. I cannot imagine little miss big hair & fake everything else sticking it out if gramps suddenly can't satisfy her in the bedroom or has a stroke.

Obviously we see this subject differently. When Anna Nicole Smith married the old dude, he certainly could take care of her financially but not sure whether there was any love involved. I can't help it I look at this couple and I see a some day porn star and a letcherous old dude.

A free world is just that, however there are rules. I agree with those that feel 16 is not an adult.

Any respectable adult male over 30 knows you need to wait until they are least 18, I draw the line at 21.

That's where the issue with parental consent is murky...some parents are awful and their judgment is bad or worse than the kids'! Ah well. Unfortunately a lot worse happens every day in the world, and this isn't a big deal at the end of the day.

Interesting to note that most, if not all of the people who have a problem with this live somewhere where you're considered old enough to fight and die for your country if your under 18 but for some reason not responsible enough to get married.As Zorak said earlier, there's some real fucked up laws with age limits around!

Not correct. You can enlist at 17 if you are a high school graduate and have your parent's consent.

Actually you can join the US army at 17 with parental permission.
