I'm pretty sure there are a lot of movies with large, relevant landmarks being destroyed or damaged. If the Eiffel Tower were attacked tomorrow, suddenly we'd all be reeeally impressed by G.I Joe: Evolved predicting just that

if the eiffel tower fell i'd celebrate:D

Honestly, I bet with half of the life-changing world events that have happened over the centuries, there's always going to be some vague old prediction that sounds like it could have been talking about it.

As for 'end of the world' prophecies - I'll believe it when I see it :p

there is no mayan prophecy of course, only that one of their many calendars "ends" in 2012. interpret that as you will.

I tend to be skeptical about the whole "END OF THE WORLD" theory going on these days. Perhaps something else shall take place such as an actual worldwide contact with aliens from another planet. Maybe the Mayans, who mysterious vanished, will comeback with knowledge for all of mankind. Then again, a small and tiny fragment of a meteorite might fall from the sky and dent the next New Year's Ball in New York. I suppose the possibilities are endless. We shall just have to wait and see.

Lmao, seriously? I haven't read up on this at all, I just heard they predicted the end of the world. So what, they didn't see the point in making calendars past that point therefore we're all screwed?

They could have stopped a whole lot earlier, they didn't make it even close :p

What the hell?

I'm off to wikipedia, I need to know more about the Mayans.

This doesn't mean I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt though. The Mary Celeste had a disappearing crew but we don't use their ships log to predict the end of the world.

Yeah, the whole thing about the Mayans predicting the end of the world isn't that they actually predicted it, it's more that their calendar ends on December 21, 2012. People interpret that to mean stuff.

Well I am just stating theories that I have heard from others. In all honesty I think some people are just referring to a certain group of Mayans. I do not think a whole tribe of people, who were scattered throughout the area, just vanished over night. Now one group vanishing in a certain region sounds a bit more plausible.

It's true, there's a great book by Charles Mann called 1491 all about the America's pre-Colombus.

The Mayans had hundreds of calendars, but three main ones.
There are numerous Mayan calendars that go way beyond 2012 too.

The Mayan empire is not as mysterious as some might believe. The mythology that surrounds it comes from the fact that for hundreds of years we knew nothing about the Maya due to the Spanish destroying much of their 'heretical' heritage and history. But there have been major breakthroughs in the last 10-20 years in Mesoamerican antiquity. For example, it's generally accepted that climate change struck a finishing blow to the Mayan civilization, after hundreds of years of over consumption and disease. (Geologists, geographers, and climatologists helped prove this fact, 1000-2000 years ago, Central America went through a huge drought and temperature increase)

That does not mean I am ruling out alien influences on their way of life either. A lot of their hieroglyphics are way too similar to what we have nowadays such as a depiction of a light bulb. I just tend to try and have an open mind overall. Books are a great source, but most books are only ones interpretation or opinion on what they believe to be true.

I believe there are some stupid, gullible people out there.

It is only "stupid" when someone can not be open minded or respect others people's beliefs as well as ideals no matter how it may differ from their own. Just my own opinion though.

according to the radio evangelist, harold camping, the rapture will occur on may 21, 2011. by the time the mayan calendar ends, the world will have been ended for over a year.

I have to admit that I find it a bit hilarious that the world was suppose to end so many times and still stands. If anything...I believe the fall of mankind shall be our own doing and not from some mere predictions stemming from books, tablets, or ancient hieroglyphics.
