The Mayan Long Count Calendar has predicted thousands of forecoming events such as the creation of stars and various other astronomical alignments; it has also predicted the end of this World as we know it on the 21st of December 2012, ending a 5,125 year long cycle.
Many proposed theories support this cataclysmic event taking place, one of the most famed being that of late apothecary Michel de Nostredame, (Nostradamus). However, his verses were written in code, and so interpretation of them lies solely with the one who reads them.
Other theories go as far as to say that the World will end in 5079!

Personally, I do not believe the World will end, and that will be my own problem on that date if I am hit by a flying fireball.
What do you think of these premonitions?

If the Mayan Calendar had been based on events in nature I may have believed it moreso. I just don't get it really, the Calendar predicts occurances to take place in outer space, not caused by volcanoes and seas etc.

Nah I don't believe it. I believe that humans are just...here. Much like everything else the earth has endured, when the earth is ready to release us, it will. Just as it did with the dinosaurs and who knows what else. Nobody can predict when that will happen based off a calendar.

That's what makes me believe it less too. Nostradamus' Quatrains have all been interpreted by persons other than himself. He wrote all of his verses in some sort of secret code and for hundreds of years they have been reversed. Most of his predictions aren't very clear, but if a certain word is pointed out it becomes clear, e.g:

The blood of the just will be demanded of London,
Burnt by the fire in the year 66.

Great fire of London - 1666. There were only between three and eight recorded deaths and so the blood of the just isn't so correct. Seems too accurate to be coincidence but I'm still not convinced.

Go on this site to look up his Quatrains in full detail and you can interpret them for yourself:

Precisely my though process. His predictions are very vague and can be interpreted in ways that benefit one who is trying to defend a certain event. Now, if the predictions were spot on, and read something like "In the year of 2001 two airplanes will crash into the twin towers"(different wording obviously, as he had no idea what an airplane was) his predictions would warrant a bit more credibility.

It's rubbish. If it were at all possible to predict the future, it's not the sort of thing that'd be relegated to extinct ancient tribes of people, we'd have figured out how they were doing it by now and used it to our own advantage.

You're completely right.
Bruce Willis and Steve Buscemi prophecised the destruction of the twin towers :p

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of movies with large, relevant landmarks being destroyed or damaged. If the Eiffel Tower were attacked tomorrow, suddenly we'd all be reeeally impressed by G.I Joe: Evolved predicting just that
