Wow, this is disturbing.
According to NPR, “In 2003, a survey of female veterans found that 30 percent said they were raped in the military. A 2004 study of veterans who were seeking help for post-traumatic stress disorder found that 71 percent of the women said they were sexually assaulted or raped while serving. And a 1995 study of female veterans of the Gulf and earlier wars, found that 90 percent had been sexually harassed.”

Posted an article like this on a local Fox News blog a couple of years ago. You should have heard the screams of the conservatives that this wasn't true. Some went to far as to say if true, these women must have asked for it....

wow, this is disturbing aswell.....

Well, for years we have the marital immunity law. For the uninitiated, the marital immunity law basically means that a man CAN sexually force himself on his wife, whether she likes it or not. If you are in Singapore, don’t worry about raping your wife. By not repealing this law, the government is also sending the “right” signal that a man can legally rape his wife.
Singaporean men are really privileged. They don’t have to worry about their wives cooking up lame excuses such as headaches and being too tired. If they can’t get their wives to consent, just resort to rape! The law “encourages” Singaporean men to satisfy their sexual urges at ANY time of the day by granting immunity from marital rape.

I know its bad here too.

OH...except SIngapore of course.......they would be squeaky clean:sarcasm

That is completely sick! I can't believe that, I would have never thought that something like that could be true. As for the marital rape article, my mom was a victim of that. That's how I got my older brother and sister.

I almost thought for a minute we were going to have another discussion about kelvin/rape--but I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole.

It seems the 30% stat comes from this article...

IngentaConnect Prevalence of In-Service and Post-Service Sexual Assault among Co...

which I'm not about to pay $20 for but anybody is welcome to if they wish. Looking at just the abstract though it appears to be yet another case of "they'll never read the source material so I'll just say WTF ever I want."

Objective: To describe the prevalence of in-service and post-service sexual assault among combat and noncombat veterans seeking Veteran’s Affairs disability benefits for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

They only looked at vets seeking treatment for PTSD. Since rape and sexual assault are known triggers for PTSD, there's a built in selection bias for rape and sexual assault when you only look at people suffering from PTSD.

30% of the women seeking treatment for PTSD having been raped does not equate to 30% of the entire female population of the military being raped.

Just that cursory look makes me think Helen Benedict has an axe to grind somewhere....
