Real Football (Soccer to you Yanks) Thread

We got a winning start to pre season with a 4-1 win over New England Revolution. Goals came from Owen, Ji Sung Park and a Macheda double. After the match Macheda insisted he wanted to stay rather than go back out on loan which is good to see, and I think he can fight for his place, he seems a lot more defined now after his loan move last season.

The Sounders should provide a much better challenge than the Revs did. I'm looking forward to the Galaxy vs. Real Madrid on Saturday. I had thought about trying to go see the game, but I have to be up super early on Sunday morning, so a 3-4 hour drive home on Saturday night isn't all that appealing. However, I am considering going down to LA for the game against Manchester City next Sunday.

It's a bit of both. In actual fact it's just a long kick from the keeper, the aim is to get it as far up the pitch as possible, and sometimes it might go in, it's not a shot at goal. The problem the other keeper has is that when he stands as far out of his goal like Myhill did, that sometimes happened.

This has happened before though, here's an example.

I agree but there is more the goalie can do if he is paying proper attention.. The shot is coming from far away and is very visible.. The lack of concentration on the game at hand is usually what causes goalies to have these goals..

If this were a shot by a regular player, what would be your view of the play ? Is it any different ?

It would really depend where the shot is from. I mean sometimes when an outfield player takes a free kick (let's use Cristiano Ronaldo as an example) the ball often swerves in the air and the keeper sometimes loses the flight of the ball and it goes past him. Watch this for example.

Admire it if you want, but the important part is 0.40 onwards. Watch the ball swerve. Now initially the keeper has an idea where Ronaldo's putting that ball, and he's in a mindset as for where he needs to be, however he hasn't accounted for the spin Ronaldo's put into the free kick with how he's kicked it in terms of position of foot on the ball. And by the time the ball has dipped and swerved it's too late. It's very difficult in a free kick situation for the keeper to suddenly move his feet to get across in time because he's essentially stood still, not in motion.

I actually scored one along those lines when I was playing goalie my last year. The keeper had come way the fuck up the field for God knows what reason, I blocked a shot, rolled it out to myself, and blasted it down the field. It rolled into the goal right as he got back to where he was supposed to be. Complete luck on my part, and thanks in no small part to him being a fucking idiot. :24:

Hope Solo looks exactly like Jennifer Carpenter to me, that's awesome lol.
I've been watching the men's matches in the Copa America, though, I can't stand women's sports usually :p
Really good match last night with Uruguay and Argentina :)
