Only in Texas...

Not unless you live to 7,000,000,000 years old... but at that point, I think you will have numerous other problems to focus on. The sun going Red Giant will be the least of your worries.

Earth will be uninhabitable long before red giant phase. He's only gotta live another 5 Billion, so it could happen. :)

What is this Red Giant sun thing about? Never heard of that.

As our star burns fuel, its mass lowers, which lowers its gravitational strength. It's a little counter intuitive to think of the star actually getting larger as it loses mass, but the reason is because the lower gravity strength can't hold the sphere as tight as before.

As the sphere gets larger, and the fuel is consumed, the fire gets cooler. Cooler fire is more red than yellow.

The most famous Red Giant that I know of is called Betelgeuse (Beetle Juice), which is the top left shoulder of the constellation Orion. If you know somebody who can point out the constellation to you, you'll actually be able to tell with the naked eye that it is red. :)

Wow. Thanks. I always assumed the sun was just one inexhaustible ball of heat.

This is Orion. :D

Our star won't turn purple. As it gets older, it will only move into darker red colors. (Unless it supernovas, but that's a new can of worms.) There are four main colors of stars, they are; Red, White, Blue, and Yellow.

I believe there are technically stars that are hot enough to be purple, but they will only look blue to us.

Here's a nice graph for ya. :D
