That is, until I eventually get a .40 of some sort. I've never fired a .40, so I'm gonna have to head to the range and try some out when I get to that point. But I know I like the XD(m) in 9mm, and it'll be a great CCW weapon.

There are two reasons why the Smith and Wesson .40 is alive.

1. The FBI in the 80's had a shootout in Miami where they had a hard time taking down two well armed, trained outlaws, and the FBI at best had some very bad luck and at worst made some poor decisions on the traffic stop.

2. Perhaps argued, but the FBI couldn't handle the 10mm round, and all they did was make a "short" 10mm with a lighter load.

The best caliber for ANY defensive situation is the caliber you shoot the best. Go out, try a 9, try a .40, try a .45, heck, try them all and see what YOU like and shoot best.

I believe one statistic one recent year was the fact that more people were killed in the U.S with a 22LR than any other caliber.

I do kind of laugh when people start the argument of EXACTLY what over priced bullet has the most expansion and "stopping power" for home defense. Personally, I wouldn't want to be shot at with any round. Then again, you could have the brand new "exploding bullet" but if your hands are shaking so much when you're life is on the line, that bullet is going to mean squat if you can't hit what you're aiming at.

By slim chance, if you actually have to utilize a firearm to save your life, chances are your heart will be pumping so fast and things happening so quickly, it won't be the size of the bullet that stops your enemy, but your shot placement and how well you USE your brain (although continued "good" training in effect replaces thinking with muscle movement).

For home defense, lets just stop the argument and say nothing beats a good scatter gun for numerous reasons.

Shooting guns isn't about who has the biggest baddest caliber, it's about having fun and utilizing that fun for training, because the more training you have, the better prepared you will be IF you have to use a gun to save your life, because the better trained you are, the better chances you have of hitting your target WHERE you want to hit it (center mass of course and it never hurts for a heat shot with ANY caliber;)).

Very well put sir...

One thing that's almost impossible for civilians to do is train in the "Red zone" and that's what scares me...
So to compensate for that, I train often to develop that muscle memory and I have taken precautions to maximize the time I have to react to any given situation at home.
1. I have a black Doberman who will slow down any would be opponent and give me time to retreat and arm
2. My first line of defense is an actual Samurai sword that can be used as a club with the sheath in place or a decapitator without. Red zone or not, you can always swing away
3. My personal weapon of choice for home is my 9mm.... yes I fully understand that it lacks in stopping power. But with the right hollow points in my clip it WILL take down a grown man. But I like my gun for it's capacity. Being able to shoot 17 rounds from one clip is an advantage to any larger caliber. If my heart is coming through my chest, I want those extra rounds, I may very well need them... who knows????

and if given the time, the AR is the choice if they are outside looking to get in....

My .40 holds 16, +1 in the chamber :D

The 5.56 is actually notorious for NOT stopping someone. It just goes through, which isn't always bad if it's in a vital area, but is pretty bad if the person is still alive...of course I'm sure there's specialized rounds that the Geneva Convention wouldn't let us use...

Seriously, I have always shot a .45 better than a .40 The .40 for me has more "snap" than a "slow push" per recoil, and I've always been able to get faster, more accurate follow up shots with a .45 Actually, I prefer the 10mm over the .40, and that's even with heavier loads in the 10.

That said, nothing I shoot at 50 yards will come close to my beloved Browning Hi Power (dang, sold that one a long time ago to).

30 rounds per clip and a laser site will ensure that they stop... it's hard to keep coming with not heart in your chest :D

plus you need to factor in the "shit in your pants" element when facing an assault rifle.

My property is big enough that I might have a 100 yard shot, that rules out a shotgun for outside...

You're mostly right about the .40 recoil. I practice with targets on a timer; they face for 3 seconds and I fire twice. I can put the first round center mass with no problem, but I tend to overcompensate for the recoil and send the second one a little low (crotch level :D ). I've never tried it with a .45, so I can't compare though...

I'm not saying the 5.56 doesn't have its place...and that is certainly its place ;)

Overall the 9mm IMO is a lame round, with that said, it's good with a couple of caveats:

If you can actually hit a target accurately.
If you live close to your neighbors (less likely to go through walls and your neighbors walls)
If you're worried about recoil while all jacked up on adrenaline, 9mm is easier to control

Personally, there will NEVER be a better home defense weapon than a 12ga.

I'll never get rid of my Mossbeg, and I pray I never actually have to us it.

But I wouldn't hesitate if someone was trying to harm me (or mine, if I had a family).

***I am by no means a firearms expert, I've was just a DoD certified weapon courier.

My home defense gun of choice is my "JUDGE" loaded with high brass #6's. The 9MM is my back-up.

Mossberg 835 Ultimag loaded with 3" magnum 000 Buckshot is our home defense weapon.

The 3.5 inch magnums are not fun to shoot at all, but up to 3" is quite pleasant with this shotgun.

That was a given once you mentioned that you owned a .45GAP:p

In all seriousness, no caliber is "bad" as long as you know how to utilize it.

Well played my friend. :p

Joe, that .45 GAP was a STEAL. I got it for $400 cash with Streamlight's M6 tactical illuminator. The light / laser at the time was over $300 itself.

and no it's not hot, it's registered with the DoJ, lol.

You see my next project?

Ok, makes a little more sense:D

Honestly, I could never figure out the .45GAP other than the fact that Glock designed a round to help the ergonomics of their own pistol. Now I went the VERY stupid route. I sent my G20 to Robar for a good grip reduction.

Seems at times nothing more than marketing on the manufacturers and gun magazines part when it comes to new calibers. I remember when Hornady's .450 was going to replace the .45-70, and although I understand the concept on faster burning, short magnum cartridges with shorter actions, for the added ballistics compared to costs, never made much sense to me.

That said, like a little kid waiting to get the new 5.45x39 out:24:

Thank you. I remembered seeing it when Taurus first released it, but thought it was .357.

It would be real hard to jamb a .410 bore into a .357 chamber....

The .410 bore has the same base dimensions as the colt .45
