Foreign National Anthems

I stand silently and remove my cap out of respect. I've skimmed the thread, and see the usual suspects on both sides.

IMHO, it doesn't matter if you feel justified or not, being rude in any place in the world still makes you and jerk in that place in the world.

Right or not, facts are facts. If country XYZ found it offensively rude that I was proud to be an American, then in country XYZ I'm a jerk.

Be one if you like, where you like, but don't complain when people point it out and don't like it. Your views don't have to be accepted by the majority for the same reason you feel you don't have to accept the majority opinion. I've found that 90% of the people commonly referred to as "jerks" believe that they are smarter than everybody else, and the rest of the world can choke on one if they don't understand their brilliance.

And FWIW, the Soviets did have a pretty sweet anthem.

I dont think ive ever been to an event where they played another countries national anthem. I guess its only respectful to stand though.

Yeah, I think that's the general consensus. Out of all the sporting events I've been to that's what happens...

Except football, where it's taking a norm that you'll boo the anthem of another country, yet say it's disgusting when they boo through ours. Crazy stuff.

I would prob just join in what everyone else was doing...except the booing, not my thing really.

I think that you're right. At most events no one boo's and everyone just does the same thing, so there's nothing to join in with. however, at the old 'soccer' once one start there seems to be a number who then follow like Lemmings, being pushed off of a cliff.. or something..

So what makes it rude to stay seated?

IMO, disrupting others, or any other obnoxious behavior during their national anthem can be considered rude. But staying seated and silent? I can not comprehend why people would consider that rude.

I don't think it's evil, but I do think a little more tribute should be paid to your home...I don't think it's much to ask.

Personally, I don't care what anyone else thinks about this country, I just seem to think its inhabitants would should in the very least a little respect.
I just think people should at least not subvert it, if it doesn't ask for subverting.

Yeah that doesn't tell me much at all. Except that you read some book.

LOL You're killing me.

A couple of things here...

You do realize that you're talking about an emotion correct? People being offended is not physics or mechanics, it is culture. Anybody could use your viewpoint on any feeling of dissention and carry it forever. Does anything offend you? If so, why?

The book part gives me a chuckle. Are you actually mocking me for pulling knowledge from a book source? I'm sorry, but I don't have time to learn my entire life’s lessons through experimentation.

And besides, it's from a movie. :24:

I think we need to get this into perspective and understand different cultures. In my country its not considered rude not standing for another countries anthem. Take the USA for instance. If I was there and knew that was considered rude, I'd stand. If the USA were over here for something though, I wouldn't stand as that's perfectably acceptable here. Don't forget, the custom of not lowering the USA flag comes from disrespecting our monarch anyway!;)

No I wasn't mocking you. I had to google it because I had no idea what it was, and I found a book.

Yes, being offended or thinking something is rude is an relative emotion. But there's are still reasons to why people feel these emotions. Grace was able to explain it. Why can't you?

Really though, if someone gets offended at you not standing, they are way too sensitive, and should reserve their anger for more important things. If you believe in freedom, let people who CHOOSE to do something (that harms no one at all) to do it.
