North Dakota has better badlands than South Dakota. Seriously! The North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park is breathtaking. There are quite a number of historic places. Wide open spaces with fresh air. Friendly folks who will come to help you if you land up in a jam.
Companies in big cities bump NoDakkers to the top of the hire list because we're well known for our work ethic. We call in sick on the day of our own funerals and are back on the job next day.

When does the winter start up there?:D

Don't feel bad, the only reason I traveled through South Dakota a lot was to get to Montana and Idaho, and I didn't do much detouring in S.D LOL

Can't say that I have been or have any desire to go.

When I think of "destination states" very few interior states come to mind. Usually I think of coastal states first.

I hear the job market's really good up there, but there's been more people moving up there than there are houses being built. Any truth to this?

Yeah, thanks to The Bakken and all the oil development that's going on. They have built numerous rail spurs and loops for loading crude onto trains to transport to refineries. BNSF hauls several crude trains right by my house each day. Lots of truck driving jobs, work on the oil rigs, support services, construction, maintenance, etc. No oil drilling where I live, it's all way west of here. However, some business are locating further east because they can't find a place to establish in the Oil Patch, so some of the benefits are reaching further east.

I hear ya, Joe!

July... So I hear....

Not quite that early............ usually.............

Normally, anytime around Halloween or after. Some years, the trick'er'treeters have gotten stormed out by a blizzard. Some years, we've had hardly a skiff of snow at Christmas. The cold weather usually sets in, come late November, and hangs on til February. It can be 40F above, or -40F with a wind chill of -70. We know all about Carharts!

I've never been, but quite a few people from where I live in Michigan have headed that way to work in the oil fields cause the job market here is non existant.

Is it true that ND's state motto is:

"40 below keeps the riff raff out" ? :tooth

-40 ambient. That's not a usual occurance. The -20 that Jeremy experienced isn't too rare. That was one mo-fo'in' cold evening, when we went for supper. Seems to me that Sarah, our waitress, sort of took our minds off the cold.

This last winter was awesome! I hope we get to have more like it in our neck of the woods.
I like that we get to see all four seasons. One of my favorite things of the Dakotas!
