Well .... after much talk and such ... we have decided to take her back to the shelter.

She is A VERY sweet dog and has shown that she is very loving to those who love her, unfortunately, she has shown that she is just not sure about grown men. My father-in-law was EXTREMELY upset and worried about his grandchildren being around the dog so he talked my wife into having her sent back to the shelter. He pretty much made all the points that were mentioned in this thread and even added other good ones.

My wife feels terrible about this as she really had her heart set for Ava and now feels like we are abandoning her ... I feel like it is still a bit too soon to make this decision but ... my position is a bit more neutral in the whole thing.

My wife informed the kids that we were going to take her back to have another family try her and they seemed okay with it .... my daughter (3 y/o) said, "Bring Lyndy back!" Lyndy was our Black Lab/German Shepard mix who passed away here at home a few weeks back. It was sad to hear that hehe.

Oh well ... now Rachel knows to be a little more head smart about getting another dog.

I do hope someone gets her ... maybe a single woman or something ... I really do hope she doesn't end up being put down because no one will get her ... she is too sweet for that.

You shouldn't be neutral in this decision.

Your wife made a decision affecting the whole family without apparently getting your input.

I highly suggest that you BOTH look for a dog that you can agree upon, unless you plan on having the kids and your wife take care of the dog by themselves.

She knows now that my input is needed for this decision in the future. I'm just kind of neutral with the decision for her return. I can see both the pros and cons for the return of Ava.

Personally, what I would like to end up getting is a Golden Retriever .... I love those dogs! :) Hell, it doesn't need to be a purebred! Most of the dogs that I have ever known to be great dogs were mixed anyway. Cheaper that way too.

Plus it would be nice to get a YOUNG puppy to be able to train it from the start ... that way there isn't any "unknowns" about the dog's history like there is with Ava.

I really appreciate all the advice and feedback from you all on this topic! Thank you! :thumbup

I hope everything works out for Ava, she seemed like a really sweet dog from what you said. I'm sure there is a good home for her and I hope she finds it soon

Goldens are magnificent family dogs. Great with kids. Labs are great too - we have one of each. Both are very high energy and you'll need to make sure you have plenty of excercise time with them. And you won't have to worry about your homeowners insurance cancelling because you own one.

Sorry you had to take her back but it probably was for the best.

As I said a good rescue org will make sure the dog is a fit. If it is just a shelter they are just placing animals and some will not take as much care in some cases.

Good luck... I am sure you will find a great dog.

I have had two labs and both were tremendous dogs. They had energy but it was manageable.

I dread the day I lose my yellow lab Maggie. She is 10 years old and has been my life line the last couple years.

I really want a Great Dane. But might have to hire a pooper scooper company if I get one :D

So sorry Mercury, it was for the best :( I also hope Ava finds a nice home, she's a beautiful dog.
Just keep looking and reading up on breeds! My boyfriend and I have spent hours at this website (yes we're dog nerds) looking at breeds. It's really best to know exactly what you're bringing in the house:

Definitely can't go wrong with a lab or retriever; they're popular for a reason! :)

Thanks :)

That website is awesome! Thanks for sharing it!

There was a 6 mo. old Shepherd/Rottweiler mix puppy on the Oregon Humane Society's website that caught my eye! Cute little bugger ... he was gone though when I went back to the page five hours later though :(

I would be leery of that mix from the Human Society. Same issues as the pit bull and not knowing what it had gone thru

ever consider a greyhound, i adopted one last year, i got mine from a place in VT and they vet each dog for tolerance with kids, cats, other dogs etc etc before they will let you take one home

they are incredibly easy going dogs, done need mush exercise and as long as you are happy to keep them on a leash you wil have no worries

True.

Actually ... here is a good question for you all. How old should a puppy be in order to feel comfortable about adopting it?

There are a few more puppies that have been listed this morning on their site that have caught our eye ... what do you all think?

Never thought about a Greyhound before ... I would imagine that they would be very apt to running LOL!

That's interesting about their tolerance ... I wouldn't have guessed that they were a tolerable breed.

Thanks for the info on them!

Are you adopting the puppy to keep it from the gas chamber or from a breeder?

Ultimately the question per the age is how much work do you want to do? (bottle feeding is a pain).

mine is five years old been retired from racing for 2 years now and is as lazy as sin, after a 30 min walk he wants to go home, all he does all day is lounge on the couch, the idea that they need a ton of exercise is a misconception that i had before i looked into it
