Winnipeg gets an NHL team back

Here's what I think it is, just saying.

Hockey is different than baseball in that regard, as every region of the US has a warm season, and kids grow up playing baseball most commonly. I think that's why baseball is always called America's game. You play it in gym, in the yard, doesn't take much to play.

Hockey used to be more of a cold winter Canada/US regional thing when it started (obviously you can build an ice rink anywhere, and a lot of areas have, but it's only been relatively recently that hockey has exploded in popularity). In Canada and areas of the US that make backyard ice hockey possible...it's huge there. It was just about exposure initially, I think.

The Original Six teams just represent the heart of hockey to a lot of fans more than historical early teams in baseball. They win, they have huge fanbases.

I'm sure that phenomena will fade as other teams get more money and success.

So the original six are like the Cubs, Red Sox, Yankees, Giants, Dodgers, and Cardinals then?

Oops, left the Braves out

I wouldn't compare them to baseball teams, I think there's a different reason for their popularity than the MLB.

Well those baseball teams are among the oldest (Cubs and Braves having been around since 1870) in baseball, and among the most popular and successful for over a century.

I guess I'll never understand the original six shit then... it just reeks of elitism to me. :dunno:

I'll just enjoy the fact that my baseball team is the oldest professional sports team in North America. :D

Like I said, I think it's a regional thing. Comparing baseball to hockey in terms of its old school fanbase is kind of comparing apples to oranges because of it's history as a markedly less popular sport than baseball. More people have liked more teams a lot longer in baseball than hockey, so that affect kinda wore off a long time ago.

I think you understand the original six shit already. :cool

That was the point :p Though only partially... because I don't want to be in a division of the most storied franchises, and that seems to be what a lot of original six fans want.

I like the original six, mostly for their logos and because I live in the middle of them, really...point is, I don't think it would be fun if they were all in the same division. Who would ever watch the shitty divisions then? :D
