I don't agree that if Liverpool suddenly magically wiped out the debts and had money top players would just come, it doesn't just happen like that. Not just Hodgson not being a top manager, but also Liverpool not being a top drawer club anymore. Liverpool wouldn't get the Aguero's, the Messi's, the Higuain's, the....basically any top players. Now the reason I say Hodgson wouldn't attract them is because he isn't a top name, I applied this logic to Mark Hughes at Man City when he got sacked. Someone like Mark Hughes isn't going to attract Europe's top players over a long period, whereas Roberto Mancini is a bigger name. However saying this if City don't make top 4 minimum this season Mancini will be sacked, because with all the money that's been spent anything below a top 4 finish is a failure, both financially and achievement as a knock on effect from that. As for Roy, he's done well at smaller teams because there isn't that much expectation there. Fulham are mid table premiership and the Europa League spot was seen as a huge bonus (which I assume made Liverpool go for him), he did ok in the first season with Blackburn but then went wrong in the 1998/99 season where they eventually went down (Hodgson was sacked in November I think), he did well with Switzerland, he did well with Inter (after a terrible couple of seasons prior to him joining he guided them to high league positions and the UEFA Cup final) and then Europe's lower leagues, again doing well, so he has a legacy but all at clubs who didn't really have any expectations, whereas Liverpool have/had expectations and so far he's failed.
