Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are common viruses that can cause warts. There are more than 100 types of HPV. Most are harmless, but about 30 types put you at risk for cancer. These types affect the genitals and you get them through sexual contact with an infected partner. They are classified as either low-risk or high-risk. Low-risk HPV can cause genital warts. High-risk HPV can lead to cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, and anus in women. In men, it can lead to cancers of the anus and penis.
Although some people develop genital warts from HPV infection, others have no symptoms. Your health care provider can treat or remove the warts. In women, Pap smears can detect changes in the cervix that might lead to cancer.
Correct usage of latex condoms greatly reduces, but does not eliminate, the risk of catching or spreading HPV. A vaccine can protect against several types of HPV, including some that can cause cancer.

Something else to consider... The vaccine will only help you from getting HPV, it's not a cure.

So to be effective, you need to get the vaccine before you are exposed to the virus.

I've run into SO many people, and some people on this forum, who are NOT educated about what HPV is, how it is linked to herpes and cervical cancer, and how cervical cancer is basically an STD that can be completely avoided.

Get educated people. You can get herpes from drinking after some one who has a busted up cold sore on their mouth.

What I don't know is if that type of Herpes is caused by the HPV strands that cause cervical cancer....because if so then it's not a stretch to say you can get cervical cancer from drinking after some one who has a cold sore...

Paranoia, I know, but get educated! Even if it is to prove me wrong.

I am all for some one coming in here and giving me CREDIBLE sources that negate what I say. I want to learn about this stuff too.

considering i had HPV, im well aware of what it is! found out i had it after i got pregnant with DS. i was scheduled to have my cervix frozen after having DS, but the pregnancy and having him vaginally HELPED with 'curing' it, and there was no need for my cervix getting frozen or to take any medication! i was going to the dr every 3 months for checkups and to have my cervix scraped for a 2 years after i had DS. i was in the all clear! there are 6? stages i believe, highest stage being cancerous, and i was stage 2. but now im not at any stages!

I think once you have HPV, you will always have it.

and i'll have to get back with you on the rest.....it was 5 years ago! i know it was HPV, i was level 3 at first, but with time it went from 3 to 2 and then not at a level at all. no meds, no cervix frozen, nothing. ::Shrug::

I think you're talking about Cancer, not HPV the virus itself.

it could have been cancer, but it wasnt in those stages yet.

and i had no herpes or genital warts either (which arent the same thing!) i know you cant cure a virus, but 6 yrs ago i had HPV, and now i dont! ::shrug:: i guess i'll have to ask my dr when i see him again next year!
