I'm taken aback at this post. A violent crime was committed against her. I'm sure that was first and foremost in her mind and that of her fiance when they went to report it.
But when a crime is committed even against those who show poor judgement, they should not report the crime and allow the animal who took advantage of her to get away with it and possibly commit the same crime on another woman?
Please allow me to explain, Margene.
The woman in question went to to police to report a rape. Which, of course, is the correct and obvious thing to do when you find yourself in a Western country. However, while she was in the process of reporting the crime, the Dubai police discovered that this woman was a Muslim and unmarried, and that she was sharing a hotel bedroom with her fiance. It also emerged that she was drunk when the crime happened. In Dubai, it is illegal for Muslim women to drink alcohol or have sex before marriage. So instead of hearing, 'I've been raped, please help me,' the Dubai police heard 'I am unmarried, having illegal sex and I drink alcohol.' These are crimes which incur an immediate and automatic prison sentence, so the local police basically had no choice but to arrest her and throw her in jail. It is, after all, their job to enforce the law. The reason why this story made the news is because of the irony involved. The woman was treated like a felon, whilst being a victim of crime.
I feel that this woman acted stupidly at the time. She is Muslim, of Pakistani descent, which means that she is must have been aware how women that drink and engage in unmarried sex are viewed. Had she gone to the British Embassy they would have been very sympathetic, but they would also have advised her that her options were a) to get on the next plane out or b) to report the crime and face an immediate and probably very long jail sentence. I know which I would have chosen, much as it would have galled me to do so. By reporting the crime she basically informed the police that she had contravened the local moral and drinking laws, but for reasons only known to herself she somehow expected these wouldn't apply to her.
In Dubai, any Muslim women who drink are viewed as 'immoral' and 'easy prey.' A woman who isn't in the company of her husband or father is considered fair game for any passing male. It sucks, and it is totally wrong, but this is unfortunately how things work in Dubai. There is absolutely no point in arguing over the treatment women receive, or fighting against it, because that would be like hitting your head against a brick wall. If you're a smart woman you keep your nose clean and toe the line, and you do this not because you want to, but because you really have no choice. I lived in India for a year, and I used to visit Dubai every six weeks or so to stock up on Western groceries. I KNOW what I'm talking about.
I also stand by my original statement that this woman should have shown more personal responsibility. I feel sorry that she was raped, and my heart goes out to every woman who finds herself in that horrendous situation. However, she should have respected the laws of the country she found herself in, and moderated her alcohol intake accordingly.
