People that assemble illegally are told to break it up. For some unknown reason the idiots want to ignore what they are told. Nobody got the shit beat out of em. Just got pepper sprayed. Where as in some places they would get caned. Now where does that happen anyway??

Singaporeans certainly have freedom of speech as long as they don't defame our leaders or speak in public without a permit or insult civil servants. Freedom of speech subject to Singapore laws is still freedom. I guess the N. Koreans also have freedom of speech subject to N. Korean laws.

In a brief session this morning, District Court Judge Jasvender Kaur found Dr Chee Soon Juan and Mr Yap Keng Ho guilty of speaking in public without a permit.

She, however, postponed sentencing because the Deputy Public Prosecutor wanted time to finalise its position on the remaining charges. Dr Chee and Mr Yap are charged a total of eight counts under the Public Entertainment and Meetings Act. All the charges relate to events during the elections in 2006 while Dr Chee and his colleagues were out selling The New Democrat to raise funds for the campaign. Today's conviction was for the second charge.

The Judge wanted to hear the Attorney-General's position on the remaining six charges before passing sentence. Sentencing date has been fixed for next Friday, 30 May.

Prior to this case, Dr Chee has been to prison six times: Four for public speaking, one for attempting to leave the country without a permit, and one for scandalising the Judiciary.

Without the fundamental freedoms of speech, association and assembly, it is impossible to change public policy that affect the everyday lives of the people especially in a system where the elections are controlled by the PAP.

Freedom of speech is not the abstract concept that has nothing to do with how Singaporeans live their lives. On the contrary, Singaporeans find themselves in the position where they have insufficient CPF savings, Ministers dole out to themselves huge amounts of cash, control state funds in secrecy, raise the GST without regard to the poor, etc all because Singaporeans do not have their fundamental right to speak out and oppose the Government.
The Singapore Democrats have repeatedly warned that there is a price to pay for the lack of such freedoms and democratic safeguards.

I have a problem calling a constitutional right an illegal assembly. They were peaceful, from what I could tell.

Yes there is a fine line there

You let the assembly occur and get out of hand and you do have a full blown riot. Or you stop what appears to have a strong potential to get out of control before it does.

There is a precedent for getting permits for certain types of assemblies. I assume it is done so the police has advance notice so they can have proper crowd control.

When people amass and it turns into a mob which this had the potential I do not see a problem with dispersing the crowd.

From what you could tell. Key point.

It's been long established by law and upheld by the SCOTUS that "peaceable assembly" can still be held held to legal standards like requiring permits, and following the instructions of law enforcement as to where they may gather and how they must behave.

All it takes is ONE protester to cross a line and commit an aggressive act and the rules change. Police have the responsibility to protect others and others property. If a crowd begins to get physical or uncooperative, it's their job to control and/or disperse them. Without knowing and seeing everything that happened BEFORE that video began, we can't know if the police actions were justifed or not. It's my experience that police these days are better trained and far more tolerant than in decades past - partly BECAUSE of the advent of private video and the ability to publicly display their actions. Again, I also don't see any evidence that a single person was harmed.
