I agree with others who posted a few posts earlier. In the United States, Americans have that independent streak, the desire to charter their own path that hopefully leads to success. Socialist policies take some of the decision making that is currently or originally independently made by Americans and places it in the hands of the government. This takes away the incentive to try new things and succeed.

Actually what we have is an independent streak, which many have died to protect. You can ask for the moon, but you have to be willing to work for it. Rather than asking for Earth, and sitting on your ass and having it given to you. Regardless of what people think, anytime someone "gives" anything to you, it's never free ;)

Yeah, work for it then. A little bit of socialist polices can't prevent you from being a Bill Gates or Warren Buffet.

Although " A little bit of socialist policies" may seem like a drop in the bucket, if socialist policies are continually enacted over time, then eventually that independent streak which inspires Americans to become the next Bill Gates or Warren Buffet withers away.

I have said it before, and I'll say it again. Never give anyone more power than you will allow them to abuse. THAT is what's really wrong with this country. Obama is just a person in an office, after decades of shady deals, payoffs and selling this country down the river for profit.

Maybe I have it wrong, but there is a group in this forum who were more than happy to give all sorts of power to W and after the election, the tune has changed. It seems a bit hypocritical.

I didn't post regularly here until a few months ago, but I've been anti-Patriot Act, anti Presidential Executive Order, and pretty much anti-everything that gives the president in particular, or government as a whole any additional power. There are people that exist who had no issues with Bush enacting executive order after executive order, with no regard to the fact that they might not agree with his policies later on in his presidency, or the fact that another president would have the same access to the executive order capability, and benefit from the executive orders signed by Bush.

We need smaller government, not more government. Obama promised transparency, but he's been every bit as secretive as Bush. Obama promised no more pork bills signed into law, and then he decided that we needed the stimulus. Obama said that there wouldn't be any lobbyists in his administration, and then he decided that the rule didn't apply to people he wanted to bring on board anyway.

Obama isn't going to be the president for the next 20 years, but he policies he enacts now could throw us back 20 years in trying to dig out from them.

Well it wasn't me. And there's a difference between giving power to the President to go after a nations enemies, and giving the president power to go after his own nation. I think your apples to oranges on that one. I was not a big W fan, so you must be speaking of others. And I think I made things clear in this thread that at this point in our history, it matters little who the President is, Congress and Senate have sealed our fate barring some major intervention.

To me it's simple, and I so hate these debates because you just can't win. However, our system was built on the premise that you can be what you want, build an empire, or choose not to. Over the years since the inception of the United States, the government has continually crept in, and taken small bites of our control over our collective destiny, which totally flies in the face of the original intent OF the United States to begin with, why would we have spent untold fortunes, and countless lives of soldiers opposing communism, simply to one day give up and become them. Some folks overseas live in countries that stifle imagination, or ambition. If you have a Queen/King controlling everything, what's the use in getting up and going to work? In some of the places I have been there has been only two classes, the rich and poor, and to be rich you have to be born rich. Here there's hope
